Armed Forces take title

The Singapore Armed Forces Football Club has sealed the 2006 S-League title with a 1-1 draw against Tampines Rovers.

The Singapore Armed Forces Football Club has sealed the 2006 S-League title by gaining the point it needed with a 1-1 draw against Tampines Rovers.

SAFFC, runners-up to Tampines last year, opened the scoring through English midfielder John Wilkinson in the 67th minute before Ahmad Latiff equalised in injury time.

With three games remaining in the season, SAFFC hold an unassailable 13-point lead over Tampines and are unbeaten in 19 games.

SAFFC captain Mohd Noor Ali said it was a special feeling to win the title at Tampines' ground.

"It's nice to clinch the title at Tampines Stadium," he told the S-League's website.

"Tampines are a tough side, and I remember that they and Woodlands Wellington were the favourites to win the title. Nobody thought of us as contenders, so we've done something that was unexpected."

SAFFC have now won five championships in the S-League's 11-year history.
