Arles-Avignon signs Greek pair

French first division new boys Arles-Avignon announced the signings of Greek internationals Angelos Charisteas and Angelos Basinas on two-year contracts.

Basinas, a 34-year-old holding midfielder, spent last season at English side Portsmouth, which was relegated from the Premier League.

Charisteas, 30, scored the winning goal for Greece in its shock defeat of host Portugal in the 2004 European Championship final and arrives from German club Nuremberg.

Basinas was also a member of the Greek side that tasted success in Portugal.

"I don't know the French championship but I've played in England and in Spain and I've experienced a situation like Arles-Avignon's at Mallorca," Basinas told AFP.

"I'm coming to help and do everything for my team."

Arles-Avignon was promoted from Ligue 2 after finishing third last season, having played in France's fifth tier as recently as 2006.
