AGF reject Turkish bid to snatch away Amini

Danish Superliga club AGF Aarhus have rejected an offer from an unnamed top-tier Turkish outfit for in-form Socceroos midfielder Mustafa Amini.

The club’s board met last week to consider the approach, for an unspecified figure, before giving it the thumbs down.

Amini, who is part of Graham Arnold’s AFC Asian Cup squad, is contracted until mid-2020, and the Turkish approach is not the first for him this year.

But AGF have, to this point, resisted the temptation to cash in on one of their prized assets.

Amini has made 17 league appearances for 10th-placed AGF going into the winter break, and is midway through his fourth season in Denmark.

AGF sporting director Peter Christiansen declined to comment on the interest and offers for Amini, but acknowledged his importance to the club he joined in 2016 from Randers FC.

“Musti is at a good place right now. He’s getting better and better and maturing day by day,” he told The World Game.

Amini made his starting debut for Australia in last month’s 3-0 win over Lebanon after three previous appearances off the bench.

And with key man Aaron Mooy ruled out of next month’s Asian Cup defense in the UAE, he has emerged as a serious starter contender alongside Massimo Luongo in the No. 6 or No. 8 roles at the tournament.

Australia face Jordan first up on January 6, with their final warm-up against Oman on Sunday in Dubai.
