Medel 'felt like crying'

20 June 2010-PA Sport

Chile defender Gary Medel admits he struggled to keep his emotions in check when he made his FIFA World Cup debut.

The Boca Juniors man, nicknamed 'The Pitbull' for his appearance and style of play, started at the back in the opening Group H win over Honduras.

And Medel admitted the occasion nearly got to him.

"I really felt like crying," he said.

Chile expects playmaker Jorge Valdivia to be fit to face Switzerland in its second game despite claims to the contrary from the player's girlfriend.

Valdivia's partner told Chilean television her boyfriend had suffered a torn muscle against Honduras but his team-mate Rodrigo Millar denied it.

"Jorge suffered a blow to one of his thighs but he should have absolutely no problem in playing on Monday," he said.
