Ancelotti rues lack of experience

4 October 2012-PA Sport

Paris Saint-Germain coach Carlo Ancelotti has blamed a lack of Champions League experience for his side's defeat to Porto last night (this morning AEST).

James Rodriguez grabbed the only goal for the hosts with seven minutes remaining to condemn PSG to its first defeat in Group A.

Despite an extensive squad-rebuilding programme, funded by the club's Middle Eastern owners, Ancelotti still believes his players need more exposure to Europe's elite club competition before they can really make their mark.

He said: "It's our first defeat this season, but it's no wonder we lost because we faced a team more experienced than we are.

"We have not yet got enough experience to come here on a level playing field. Porto have many qualities and a strong identity. We need a little more time.

"We are disappointed, however, because we wanted to produce a better game here.

"The fact is, that wasn't possible and we must accept it.

"Don't forget we're quite a new team. On top of that, Porto produced a good performance.

"But nothing changes for us, now let's prepare for Marseille."

Striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, a veteran of several Champions League campaigns with previous clubs, also played the experience card with PSG mixing it with the continent's best for the first time in eight years.

The Swede said: "It was a 50-50 game. I had two good chances and they had some good chances, too.

"Porto are the favourites to win the group because they have more experience than us but we were able to trouble them.

"I think we are learning with every game.

"It's our first time in the Champions League for a long time and it's a different game."
