Shamrock held in UCL tie

18 July 2012-PA Sport

Stephen O'Donnell missed a late chance as Shamrock Rovers was held to a goalless draw by Ekranas in the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round in Dublin.

Shamrock had its chances against the Lithuanian league leader, the best of which saw O'Donnell burst through late only to fire straight at visiting goalkeeper Emilljus Zubas.

Hopes were high after last season's heroics when Shamrock became the first Irish team to reach the UEFA Europa League group stages, but it must now get a result in Lithuania next week to progress.

Welsh side The New Saints put up a brave performance to hold Sweden champion Helsingborgs to a goalless draw in its first-leg clash in Oswestry.

New signing Chris Jones hit the post as the host dominated the game for long periods but was unable to gain an advantage ahead of next week's return game in Sweden.
