Troisi not hung up on Socceroos recall

James Troisi wants to break back into the Socceroos set-up for the 2019 Asian Cup but admits the decision is out of his hands.

Troisi, capped 37 times for his country, was a regular under Ange Postecoglou but surprisingly missed the cut for the 2018 World Cup in Russia under interim coach Bert van Marwijk.

It was an undoubted blow for the Melbourne Victory man who has been a fixture of the national team for years. With Graham Arnold now taking the reins of the Socceroos, Troisi is out for a recall.

The 30-year-old winger was part of the Australian side that lifted the Asian Cup in 2015 and scored the winning goal in the final against South Korea in Sydney. “Yeah of course [I want back in], but obviously with what I’ve just been through with the Socceroos, that’s never in your hands,” Troisi told The World Game.

“It doesn’t matter how good you are, or what you’re doing, whether you win the league or whatever, that can taken away from you very quickly.
“So the most important thing isn’t the voice in everything that I’ve done [in the past], your bread and butter is your club football.

“If you’re playing regularly and doing well, and physically your fit and looking after yourself, that’s all that’s in your hands.

“Whether the gaffer likes you or not, I guess that’s in his hands. Right or wrong, they have the final say.”

Troisi made his debut for Australia in 2008 after 13 appearances for the Olyroos. The attacking midfielder was part of the Under-23 team that played in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. It was coached by Arnold, and Troisi featured in matches against Argentina and the Ivory Coast.
The South Australian product, who has played around the world with spells in England, Turkey, Italy, Belgium, Saudi Arabia and China, helped Victory topple Newcastle Jets in the A-League grand final last season. Troisi is realistic about a return to the Socceroos and concedes if he doesn’t get another opportunity, he has already experienced a lot in his decade with the green and gold.

“The only thing you can do is prove what you’re doing week-in-week-out and the rest should take care of itself,” he said.

“If it doesn’t – for me, I’ve been to the Olympics, I’ve been to the Asian Cup, I’ve been to a World Cup, we’ve won the Asian Cup.

“So we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.”
