Legends bid farewell to Miljanic

The commemoration held in Belgrade City Hall was attended by representatives of FIFA, UEFA and a delegation from Real Madrid, led by former stars Burgeon and Samancor Amaro. Samancor was coached by Milan in Real Madrid.

Burgeon said Milan had meant a lot to Real Madrid and that the club was grateful for everything the late coach had done for both the club and the game in general, Tanjung news agency reported.

"He completely changed the concept of football. People in Spain adored him," Burgeon told the agency.

"That is why we are here, to express our deep condolences to the family and football community of Serbia, because this is the great loss for all," he said.

Football legends from throughout the former Yugoslavia who played in 1970s and 1980s and later made the national side like Safest Susic, Ivica Osim and Dragan Stojkovic also attended the commemoration and funeral at Belgrade's main cemetery.

Milan died last week at the age of 81.

After a brief career as a defender with Red Star Belgrade, Milan coached the team and won 10 national championships.

However, his greatest success was with Real, where he coached from 1974 to 1977. In the 1974-1975 season, he became the first foreigner to win both the national championship and the Spanish Cup in one season.

He also briefly coached Valencia for a season in 1982.

Milan was also the head coach of the former Yugoslavia's national team, leading them to the 1974 and 1982 World Cup finals.
