Racing Santander loses Primera Liga status

29 April 2012-PA Sport

Racing Santander became the first casualty of the Primera Division season as it bid farewell to its top-flight status after losing 3-0 at Real Sociedad.

Highly-rated French winger Antoine Griezmann netted twice in the second half before setting up Imanol Agirretxe for Sociedad's third seven minutes from time as Racing's 10-year spell in La Liga came to end.

The writing has been on the wall for some time for Racing, which has taken just three points from the last 13 games and is without a victory since mid-January.

Third-bottom Sporting Gijon look determined to avoid the same fate as Racing and it gave its hopes of survival another big boost with a 3-0 win at Espanyol.

Second-half goals from Adrian Colunga, Oscar Trejo and substitute Mate Bilic earned Sporting a third victory in four games and it moves on to 34 points - four behind Villarreal, which was held 1-1 at home by Osasuna.

Villarreal looked set to move six points clear of the drop zone after taking a 44th-minute lead through Bruno Soriano but the host paid the price for failing to make the most of several opportunities when Osasuna midfielder Raul Garcia found the top corner with a stunning volley 18 minutes from time.

That was a blow for Villarreal but it received good news from elsewhere as 16th-placed Granada lost 3-1 at UEFA Champions League-chasing Levante.

Levante moved back into the top four ahead of Malaga, who play third-placed Valencia on Monday (AEST), thanks to goals from Arouna Kone (46), Xavi Torres (73) and Valdo (85). Granada had briefly drawn level through Odion Ighalo's 67th-minute equaliser.

In the other match, Real Mallorca leapfrogged Getafe into the top 10 with a three-point haul at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

Goals from Victor Casadesus, Alejandro Alfaro and substitute Tomer Hemed put Mallorca in complete charge and Getafe could only manage a late consolation strike from Alexis.
