Title holders Orlando Pirates advanced to South Africa's Top 8 Cup semi-finals after a 1-0 win against Bloemfontein Celtic in the opening match of the season.
Midfielder Andile Jali scored eight minutes from time at a vibrant Orlando Stadium, sending Cameroon international Patrick Tignyemb the wrong way from a harshly awarded penalty.
The Soweto-based Pirates won the league title, the Top 8 Cup and the League Cup last season and also captured three of the four domestic competitions the previous season.
The Top 8 Cup is contested by the top eight finishers from the 2011-2012 championship, with Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs due to meet for a spot in the semi-finals later this weekend.
