Burns given chance to shine

Australia forward Nathan Burns has an ideal opportunity to climb his way up the pecking order in Tuesday evening's (Wednesday morning AEST) friendly against world No.56 Poland at the Wisla Krakow Stadium.

The AEK Athens forward is expected to enjoy his first international start with new boss Holger Osieck ready to shake up his line-up from the friendly in Switzerland.

Burns caught the eye during the recent Sydney Festival of Football with his Greek club and has a rare chance to enjoy some decent time on the pitch for the national team.

With Josh Kennedy and Harry Kewell absent through injury and Tim Cahill and Scott McDonald playing up front in St Gallen, it is a rare opportunity for Burns to shine.

The industrious McDonald is ahead of the 22-year-old at the selection table but the ex-Adelaide United player can take his first step to rearranging that order by netting at the 33,000 seat stadium in Krakow.

McDonald was dangerous in St Gallen but blew two golden chances to open his international account in his 17th appearance for Australia.

Osieck called for his players to not be so wasteful in front of goal after the Socceroos squandered plenty of chances in the 0-0 draw with Switzerland at AFG Arena.

"We put a lot of work into our game and what really matters did not come up," Osieck told AAP.

"It is what we have to be working on and we definitely need to get our finishing better and be more clinical in front of the goal.

"No doubt about that."

The likes of Richard Garcia, Jade North, Jon McKain and Adam Federici are also going to be on trial in front of the World Cup-winning assistant after sitting out the Swiss clash.

Dario Vidosic, Tommy Oar and Mile Jedinak should all see plenty of game time following their cameos at the AFG Arena.

With his first game in charge out of the way, Osieck said he would be closely scrutinising the attitude of players as he looks to rest up big names such as Tim Cahill, Lucas Neill and Mark Schwarzer.

"I am pretty relaxed ... because it is not so much score related as in normal games," Osieck said.

"It is to identify and for the players to stand up and play the role they are expected to play in the team."

That is the German's polite way of warning his charges to play his way or face watching January's Asian Cup in Qatar from afar.

Poland will enter the match with renewed confidence on the back of a 1-1 draw against fellow Euro 2012 host Ukraine in Warsaw.

Auxerre striker Ireneusz Jelen snapped a six-month goal drought for the Polish team in that contest.

The home side had failed to score in four successive friendlies before the Warsaw encounter, including a 6-0 humbling by World Cup and European champion Spain.

Poland, an automatic qualifier for Euro 2012 because of its role as host, has made the World Cup seven times but failed to qualify for South Africa.
