It may not have been worth the early morning wake-up call but more than two million Socceroos fans tuned in to watch their team get smashed by Germany in the opening round of the World Cup.
It meant starting the Queen's Birthday holiday with a 4.30am alarm but die-hard football fans were not swayed with the live match recording a national average audience of 1.4 million.
A total of two million Aussies tuned in at some point during the match, with the numbers making up 90 per cent of the audience share for that time of the morning.
But fans were not rewarded for their efforts.
Germany struck early, scoring two goals in the first half, then sealing victory with two more in the second after Tim Cahill was sent off for a late tackle.
In comparison, the 9.30pm screening of the Netherlands v Denmark match only managed an average of 580,000, and a total of 1.3 million nationally.
More than five million Australians have tuned in to the World Cup coverage on SBS since the competition began on the weekend.
And SBS' The World Game site has had more than 600,000 users and almost 800,000 video views to date.
