Overlooked... Europe-bound duo Djite and Burns have missed out on Beijing (Getty Images)

Australian Under 23 coach Graham Arnold has named his 18-man squad for the 2008 Olympic Games Men's Football Tournament in which there is no place for Bruce Djite or Nathan Burns - while Harry Kewell, who has joined Turkish champions Galatasaray, will not be one of the three over-age players.

The three overage players are defender Jade North, wide-man David Carney and Melbourne Victory striker Archie Thompson. Nine A-League players have been selected with defender Mark Milligan and winger James Troisi both currently without a club.

Genclerbirligi-bound forward Djite has not made the cut depite being a regular squad member with the Socceroos under Pim Verbeek while AEK Athens signing Burns has missed selection, despite many good judged rating him the country's most promising young attacker.

Olyroos squad: Mark Bridge (Sydney FC), David Carney (Sheffield United, England), Billy Celeski (Melbourne Victory), Adam Federici (GK, Reading, England), Neil Kilkenny (Leeds United, England), Adrian Leijer (Fulham Athletic, England), Trent McClenahan (Hereford United, England), Mark Milligan (uncontracted), Stuart Musialik (Sydney FC), Nikita Rukavytsya (Perth Glory), Kristian Sarkies (Adelaide United), Matthew Spiranovic (FC Nurnberg, Germany), Nikolai Topor-Stanley (Perth Glory), James Troisi (uncontracted), Tando Velaphi (GK, Perth Glory), Ruben Zadkovich (Derby County, England), Jade North (Newcastle Jets), Archie Thompson (Melbourne Victory).

"It was a difficult job selecting the team,” Arnold said. “I had a look not only at current form of the players but their form right through the qualification campaign.”

“The three overage players will bring both attacking and strong defence to the team."

Troisi is the youngest member of the squad at 19.

“I’m excited and really looking forward to being an Olympian,” Troisi said. “We’ve got a good squad and it’s going to be a great experience.”

On the other side of the scale, Newcastle Jets skipper North can't wait for his chance in Beijing after also representing his country in Athens four years ago.

“It is a real honour to be picked to go to Beijing,” he said.

“I can’t wait to start training with them and get over there. I really hope to go in and lead by example for the younger players.”

I'm staggered. I go to most Adelaide United games and have watched Burns and Djite play in temperatures WORSE than they will experience in Beijing. And add their experience in the AFC on top of that! This is clearly a personality clash, which is exactly why we should think twice about coaches who are too involved with the players. A foreign coach will look far more dispassionately at team selection, and pick players on their MERIT, not personal feelings.

The saying - doesn't matter how old you are if youre good enough youre good enough. How can Djite, Holland, Burns be in Socerroos frame but not be good enough for Olyroos ??? As for age look at of Troisi (19) and Spiranovic (20). Williams non selection is another I fathom to grasp.

What is wrong with this guy? Seriously?? How does he still have a job to start with. If the FFA dont step in now and get rid of him, he is going to make a joke out of our young talent, which i thought had a lot of potential. But with Arnold in charge they will be lucky to get a single point. He has just shown his true colours by leaving out the two best up and coming talents, Burns looked to be the only real creative midfielder we had!!!!

What a joke - can't play in the heat. Burns and Djite are used to training and playing in the Adelaide summer that can be 35 for a couple weeks in a row. It's a pathetic excuse.

Djite and Burns can't handle the heat eh? What a joke! Arnold himself showed that he couldn't handle the heat at the AFC. Why should Milligan be rewarded after going AWOL, being uncontracted, and generally being over rated with attitude? Crikey, no club wants him. Any player worth their salt doesn't have to trial. He says he's disappointed at missing out at Man City saying "out of my control". Therein lies his attitude problem. It was totally in his control - he wasn't good enough.

The reasons Arnold gives for leaving out burns and Djite are tepid If we do not progress beyond the group stage then surely even Arnie will see the writing is well and truly on the wall time to go Arnie...time to go......

The Burns omission is a disgrace. He is by far our best young attacking prospect. I haven't seen anything in Djite to suggest he's in the same class, having said that I still wonder where Arnold sees goals coming from. I will be very surprised if the Olyroos take anything more than a point from their group. I'll be watching the boys in Beijing, but in truth I'd prefer to be watching the Joeys.

What can i say that hasn't already been said? I'm absolutely speechless. After the Olympics Arnold has to be removed from the national setup, including assistant to Pim. Djite, Burns, Williams, Holland good enough for Socceroos but not Olyroos? Not to mention Vidosic.. However hothead Zadkovich is included, what chance he gets red carded in Beijing? Thompson is a terrible decision, give the young guys a chance for god's sake!!

For all you experts who criticize Arnold for picking Thompson you honestly have no idea on football. He is miles and miles ahead of Djite at this stage of his career. Give Bruce time and he may develop into a decent footballer but right now give me Archie any day of the week. Why would Pim take him to the Middle East even though he was clearly injured? The answer is that he is clearly better than any other forward available. The only criticism I have is I think there are too many defenders!!

Absolute rubbish excuse for leaving Burns and Djite out Arnie. Too young! Give me a goddamn break! It is an underage tournament for God's sake! Sorry arnie I have always liked your style as a gaffer but this decision is surely the last nail in the coffin of your national coaching career. There will be too many annoyed Socceroo supporters. I can feel a grassroots "Sack Arnie" campaign coming on bigtime, and judging by this joke of a squad it is about time too!
