McCall admits defensive concerns

Shaun Hutchinson (groin), Steven Saunders (knee) and Jonathan Page (thigh) were all missing for Stevie Hammell's testimonial against Everton at Fir Park, leaving trialist Simon Ramsden, formerly of Bradford City, and 19-year-old Adam Cummins to pair up against the Premier League side.

After a 1-1 draw where Well midfielder Nicky Law levelled a first-half header from Shane Duffy, McCall was asked if his three injured centre-backs should be back for the European tie at Fir Park.

"No I don't think so," he said. "They (Ramsden and Cummins) could be our centre-back pairing (against Panathinaikos).

"Jonathan Page is going to be a couple of weeks, Steven Saunders will be at least a couple of weeks.

"We are hoping Hutchy, he is back up to full speed running but obviously he has had no football, so we are hoping to get him part of the game either against Hamilton or against Partick Thistle on Wednesday.

"Young Scouse (Cummins) had an operation in the summer so it's almost his first game back although he only had one game last season for us.

"Obviously I would like to bring a player in and that would be Simon Ramsden.

"We probably need three or four players in but we are not going to be able to do that.

"But that's the way it's going to be for a lot of SPL clubs, young boys will have to be thrown in."

A cameo substitute appearance by free agent James McFadden, who had played for both clubs, most recently being freed by Everton at the end of last season, entertained the crowd who watched a decent game played in the right spirit.

Hammell laughed at the rapport former team-mate McFadden had with the home fans.

He said: "I think the fans were happy to see him.

"I think the 'we're only here to see McFadden' song that they sang at me was a bit harsh but it was good to see him back out there.

"I enjoyed the day."
