Mariners say Simon's back

 Striker Matt Simon will re-join Central Coast Mariners for season nine
of the A-League after signing a one-season deal with the
club.

	<story:content>
Striker Matt Simon will re-join Central Coast Mariners for season nine
of the A-League after signing a one-season deal with the
club.

No stranger to Central Coast supporters, Simon left the Mariners in January 2012 for K-League side Chunnam Dragons. However, an unfortunate string of injuries throughout his time in Korea Republic ended in him agreeing a mutual release from the Dragons earlier this year.

The 27-year-old has opted to return to the familiar surrounds of the Central Coast under the guidance of Graham Arnold.

The 2008 Beijing Olympian believes his first professional club can help nurture him back to the level of form which led to him being courted by, and eventually transferred to, the Gwangyang-based outfit last year.

“I am really excited to come back to the club,” Simon said. “I had a tough time in Korea with injury. But it’s a great time to come back and I am happy to be joining the champions.”

Simon said knowing he would again be working with top professionals who understand how his body ticks was a key factor in his decision to sign on with Central Coast.

“I couldn’t quite get my body right in Korea,” he explained. ‘Nealo’ (Mariners Physiotherapist Andrew Nealon), ‘Clarky’ (Mariners Head of Sports Science Andrew Clark) and ‘Arnie’ (Mariners Head Coach Graham Arnold) are the best in the business, and 100 per cent working with them again was a big part of my decision of coming home.”

“I have been back on the park and have been using the Centre of Excellence with Clarky and Nealo over the last three weeks. Slowly, step-by-step I am making progress. It’s a long off-season so there’s plenty of time for me to work on what I need to before the start of next season.”

Central Coast Mariners coach Graham Arnold believes the Mariners have secured a major playing coup by having Simon re-join the Club.

“It is great to have Matty back,” Arnold said. “He’s a local player, a fan favourite, was born and developed on the Coast, and it’s great the supporters will get the chance to see him in our colours again.”

“At the peak of his powers, Matt is one of the A-League’s best players. We also like recruiting people who we believe will fit seamlessly into the culture we have built at the club, and we know Matt not only fits but enhances our camaraderie and culture.”

Central Coast Mariners chairman, Peter Turnbull, said: “We’re delighted to have Matt Simon back with the Club. He’s the type of player every footballers loves to play with, but hates to play against.”

“We know our fan base will share our excitement in having Matt back with us. As he is a local boy, we hope his signing will further enhance the grassroots work we will be doing over the off-season in the Central Coast community.”

After a steady start to life as an A-League professional, the former East Gosford attacker truly began to make his name in Australia’s top flight in the 2008-2009 campaign, when he scored 11 goals in just 21 appearances.

Despite playing just 14 matches for the Mariners in season 2011-2012, Simon shared the club’s Golden Boot Award alongside Bernie Ibini and Patrick Zwaanswijk, having scored seven goals in an impressive first half of the season.
</story:content>

	<story:content>
Melbourne Victory confirmed it has signed midfielder Mitch Nichols from Brisbane Roar on a two-year deal, reuniting him with his former coach Ange Postecoglou.
Postecoglou, who presided over Roar's consecutive championships and 36-match unbeaten run, is believed to have played a significant role in Nichols's decision not to re-sign with Roar.

"It’s an exciting time at Melbourne Victory and acquiring an Australian player of Mitch’s quality is testament to that," Postecoglou said.

"For someone so young he’s achieved a lot in his career to date, but he’s still extremely hungry for more success and he’ll add some real attacking flair to our group.

"Goal-scoring midfielders aren’t easy to come by and Mitch’s track-record speaks for itself, so I’m looking forward to seeing him on the first day of pre-season training."

Nichols expressed his delight at finalising the deal that was mooted when Roar announced last week it had failed to reach an agreement with the 24-year-old off-contract star. “I’m really excited to be joining Melbourne Victory and linking up with Ange again,” Nichols said.

“I’ve enjoyed six great seasons and plenty of success at Brisbane Roar but I just felt it was time for a change, so when Melbourne came calling I didn't hesitate - even though I still had options in Europe.

“I want to thank the Brisbane fans, the club and my former team mates for all they have done for me throughout the last six seasons. I leave with fond memories and close friendships that will stay with me forever, but now I look forward to a new and exciting chapter in my career."

Nichols will join his new teammates when the playing group returns from annual leave on Wednesday, 5 June.
</story:content>

He's a proven A-League player so I'm expecting him to step up and play an important part in 2013-14."

Jurman is looking forward to being reunited with some familiar faces in Sydney - while mid-season signing Tiago Calvano is strongly tipped to be offered a new Sky Blues deal for the 2013-2014 camaign.

"I'm really good mates with Vedran (Janjetovic), Seb (Ryall) and Rhyan (Grant) and a few of the boys as well so it's going to be good and I'm determined to have a big season as well," Jurman said.

"The way the team was playing at the end of the year you could tell that they were playing a lot better obviously and I think they were a bit unlucky in the end but I think everyone's going to be hungry to have a big season next year and so am I so it will work out well."

Jurman, who played for Sydney's National Youth League team before being promoted to the senior squad, also set his expectations high, saying: "Nothing less than winning it (the competition).

	<story:content>
Perth Glory midfielder Steven McGarry scooped the club's main awards this season and was rewarded with a new contract until the end of the 2013-2014 campaign.

The 33-year-old played 27 games latest season and scored three goals as Perth snuck into the top six.

“I’m very excited to be part of Perth Glory for another year,” McGarry said.

“There’s already a great buzz around the club, it’s going to be a pretty exciting season.

“My family and I love this city and we have built some great relationships with everyone at Perth Glory including our fans.

“People think in terms of football when you reach the age of 35 you’re finished, but people like Ryan Giggs, Alessandro Del Piero and even Jacob Burns have proved them all wrong.

After 88 games for Glory since joining the club in 2010, McGarry is looking forward to becoming a more influential member of the squad as coach Alistair Edwards looks to revamp the playing group with a focus on developing local talent.

“Realistically, it’s coming up to the last stage of my career, but I’m feeling fit, feeling great and I’m playing the best football of my career," McGarry said.

“I’m also looking forward to playing a larger role in the team, to help guide the youngsters that coach Alistair Edwards is recruiting.

"I’m excited and nervous for pre-season in a few weeks."

Edwards was delighted to keep the versatile midfielder at the club as he also confirmed the signings of two homegrown youngsters.

"I'm delighted that Steve has re-signed with the club,” Edwards said.

“He’s an integral member of the squad moving forward.

“His experience will prove invaluable to our younger generation."

Cameron Edwards, Alistair's son, and 20-year-old goalkeeper Jack Duncan are the latest recruits.

Edwards (21) returns to the club after spells with Reading in 2011 and the Nike Football Academy in 2012.

"Both Jack and Cameron are youth internationals who fit into our style of play very well."

“Cameron was a former Joey and U20 international, and Jack is a current representative for the Young Socceroos.”

"The squad is coming along nicely.”

“The recent additions are in-line with generating the appropriate balance between our excellent experienced players and the up-and-coming youth."

"Alongside recent signings Danny De Silva, Riley Woodcock and Matty Davies they form an important part of the strategic squad regeneration"
</story:content>

 Australia captain Lucas Neill has snubbed Melbourne Heart to sign a short-term guest deal with two-time A-League champion Sydney FC.

	<story:content>
Australia captain Lucas Neill has snubbed Melbourne Heart to sign a short-term guest deal with two-time A-League champion Sydney FC.

Neill, who is eager for regular football after being deemed surplus to requirements by Dubai-based club Al Wasl, has agreed terms with the Sky Blues for the remainder of the current season.

"I'm a Sydney boy and I’m excited to be coming back to Australia to play club football in front of friends and family with Sydney FC," Neill said.

"I worked with (coach) Frank Farina for many years in the Socceroos and I look back on those times with good memories, and it’s great to have the chance to enjoy further success together at Sydney.

"Hopefully the team can get a win today and I look forward to meeting my new teammates tomorrow.”

A big factor in Neill's decision was the opportunity to work with former mentor Farina.

"We’re thrilled Lucas has joined Sydney FC," Farina said.

"He is the current Socceroos captain and one of Australia’s most decorated players but more importantly he is a tremendous defender and he will make a valuable contribution in the run in to the semi-final series."

Sydney-born Neill was tipped to join former Socceroos teammate John Aloisi's Heart but the Victorian club is believed to have baulked at the defender's wage demands after meeting the player on Friday.

Neill, who will be 35 in March, told Heart on Saturday that he had decided to join Sydney which is bankrolled by Russian billionaire David Traktovenko.

Neill will begin training on Sunday and ironically his first A-League game could be against Heart at AAMI Park next weekend.

Meanwhile, Sydney and marquee striker Alessandro Del Piero are also expected to rubber-stamp their deal that will take the Italian World Cup winner to his second season in the A-League.

Del Piero, contrary to media reports, has a two-year contract whereby one of the two parties has an option to bale out after the first year.

The player has said publicly he was happy in Sydney and the club is satisfied with his contribution so there is nothing to stop Del Piero from playing on next season, barring agrreement on a few minor marketing details.

The news comes a day after it emerged that midfielder Nick Carle is expected to return to Sydney FC after his loan period with Abu Dhabi-based Baniyas expires on 30 June.
</story:content>

	<story:content>
Celtic retained the services of star striker Gary Hooper beyond the January transfer window - but appeared to miss out on Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Kevin Doyle ahead of the deadline.

Norwich City target Hooper had already been the subject of three failed bids from the Premier League side, with reports of fourth and fifth offers being tabled by the Canaries.

However, Celtic made it clear it had no intention of sanctioning the departure of one of its key players, especially with a UEFA Champions League last-16 clash against Juventus to look forward to.

Boss Neil Lennon took to his official Twitter account to clarify the situation a couple of hours before the deadline.

He wrote: "Contrary to reports there have been no fresh bids for Gary and even if there are they will be rejected..he is NOT for sale."

Lennon will no doubt be thrilled that Hooper will remain in the east end of Glasgow for now.

But attempts at bolstering his strike force appear to have been scuppered after Wolves manager Dean Saunders told a press conference, after the match against Leicester City, that interest in Doyle from Celtic had been rebuffed.

Meanwhile, Trelleborgs goalkeeper Viktor Noring was pictured arriving at Celtic Park but there has been no confirmation as yet from the Hoops on whether a deal has been done.

Elsewhere in the ScottishPremier League, Hibernian signed winger Matt Done on loan from Championship side Barnsley until the end of the season.

He told the club's website: "I'm really pleased to have signed for Hibs - this is a good opportunity for me and I'm looking to make an impact.

"I believe I've developed as a player after spending the past season and a half in the Championship with Barnsley.

"But I've not played as much as I would've wanted to this season, so hopefully I can play well for Hibs and earn a regular place in the starting line-up."

Aberdeen completed the signing of Mark Reynolds on a four-and-a-half-year deal, after the Sheffield Wednesday defender made his loan move permanent.

Reynolds said: "After a spell of uncertainty, it's great to get my future sorted out and know that I'm going to be in the north-east for the foreseeable future.

"It's up to me to repay the faith the club has shown in me and I do believe we have a squad capable of bringing success to Aberdeen."

The Dons also signed goalkeeper Dan Twardzik on an 18-month contract after being granted international clearance.

He told the club's website: "After spending a week here earlier in the season, I made up my mind that this was the place I wanted to come to.

"I was delighted when the club approached me on Tuesday evening and said that they wanted me."

St Johnstone made a double swoop when it signed Medhi Abeid and Gwion Edwards on loan from Newcastle United and Swansea City respectively, while midfielder Kevin Moon left the club by mutual consent.

Newcastle defender Paul Dummett returned to St Mirren after agreeing another loan deal until the end of the campaign.

Bottom side Dundee signed Nottingham Forest midfielder David Morgan on loan for the remainder of the campaign in a bid to boost its SPL survival hopes.

Ross County recruited Swiss defender Branislav Micic from Sion, while Ross Tokely and Marc Fitzpatrick both left the Highland side.

Kilmarnock did not strengthen but confirmed Alex Pursehouse had been released.

Heart of Midlothian did not add to its squad on transfer deadline day either - but it did secure three young players on extended contracts.

Scotland Under-21 midfielder Dale Carrick signed until the northern summer of 2014, left-back Kevin McHattie - who has made 10 starts this season - signed a two-year deal, while Scotland Under-19 goalkeeper Jack Hamilton put pen to paper for another year.
</story:content>

window. Tony Palumbo looks at which players moved where and whether or
not it will have a significant bearing on the championship.
<story:content>
Italy's Serie A was a hive of activity during the 2013 January transfer window.

Here is a look at which players moved where and whether or not their movement will have a significant bearing on the championship.

AC Milan picked up one of the biggest, most volatile names in football with the capture of Mario Balotelli. Milan lost Alexandre Pato, but gained utility player Cristian Zaccardo from Parma and defender Bartosz Salamon from Brescia, beating an offer from Zenit St Petersburg.

Juventus has signed Nicolas Anelka, greeted with scepticism by most commentators. It tried, in vain, to get Ishak Belfodil from Parma and had to settle for Federico Peluso.

Napoli lost two expert players – Salvatore Aronica and Andrea Dossena- and signed Pablo Armero from Udinese, Emanuele Calaio from Siena, young Serbian Josip Radosevic, and Rolando on loan from Porto, where he has been kept on the sidelines for the whole season.

Inter Milan let young Brazilian forward Phillipe Coutinho go, to Liverpool, for $11 million dollars, but was very active in acquiring new players. Young Mateo Kovacic, 18-years-old, cost $12 million. Zdravko Kuzmanovic is a defender who knows Italian football very well, having played in Serie A earlier in his career. Other additions are defender Ezequiel Schelotto from Atalanta and goalkeeper Juan Pablo Carrizo from Lazio.

Fiorentina has signed from PSG former Juventus player Mohamed Sissoko, possibly the best of its new players, the others being Matias Vecino and Marcelo Larrondo.

Palermo, surprisingly in the relegation zone, has signed no less than ten players. Andrea Dossena, from Napoli, has already established himself as a top attacking full-back. Another former Napoli player, Salavatore Aronica, is trying to tighten up a leaky defence. Chievo 'keeper Stefano Sorrentino has been recruited to aid this cause.

Genoa, as usual, has taken advantage of the January window to change its squad substantially. The newcomers are Floro Flores for the forward line, Matuzalem, Ruben Olivera and Marco Rigoni in midfield as well as Eros Pisano, Thomas Manfredini, Mattia Cassani and Daniele Portanova in defence.

Parma strengthened its defence, signing McDonald Mariga from Inter and Rodney Strasser from Milan.

Siena has lost top players like Calaio, but acquired Nicola Pozzi and Francesco Della Rocca, not enough to avoid certain relegation.

Pescara has signed three players - Guiseppe Sculli, Luciano Zauri and Gaetano D’Agostino - who will try to resurrect their careers with the promoted club.

Torino has given its coach, Giampiero Ventura, the player he wanted in Brazilian forward Barreto. That takes the number of players in the Torino squad to have previously worked with Ventura to six.

Atalanta hopes to have found in Igor Budan a good alternative to German Denis. It has also strengthened its defence with Cristiano Del Grosso, Michele Canini, Franco Brienza and Matteo Contini.

Chievo looks to have lost a lot in its goalkeeper exchange with Palermo of Stefano Sorrentino for Samir Ukajini. It could be the difference between Chievo
retaining its Serie A status and being relegated to Serie B.

Bologna, Catania, Cagliari, Udinese and Sampdoria have been fairly quiet
on the transfer market. I wonder whether they will be the real winners
at the end of the season.

	<story:content>
Fulham manager Martin Jol took to the loan market to strengthen his squad, bringing in three new players.

The Dutchman added AC Milan's utility man Urby Emanuelson and PSV right-back Stanislav Manolev to his ranks, with both signing until the end of the season, before adding Ajax midfielder Eyong Enoh on a similar deal with 20 minutes to spare.

The move for the Cameroon international midfielder was confirmed by the Dutch club on its official website, with Ajax saying he had signed with the option of a permanent deal.

The 26-year-old joined Ajax in 2008 after a successful spell with South African club Ajax Cape Town. Prior to that, he started his career with Turkish-Cypriot club Magusa TG SK.

In the case of Manolev, a 29-cap Bulgaria international, Fulham can sign him on a two-year deal at the end of the season.

Manolev started out with Pirin 1922 before a move to Litex Lovech, for which he scored the winning goal in the 2008 Bulgarian National Cup final.

Jol has managed Emanuelson in the past, with the pair working together at Ajax, and the Fulham manager said: "It's not easy to get players from AC Milan on a permanent basis.

"I coached him at Ajax. He is a skilful player, very agile. He is very mobile, quick. He can play left midfield, wide, play number 10 so I feel we need fresh legs."

The appreciation seems to be a mutual one, with Emanuelson talking highly of the role Jol has played in his career.

"I'm really looking forward to the time I will be here," he told his new club's official website.

"Martin Jol helped me a lot in my progression when I was learning the game and, because of him, it was an easy choice for me to come here.

"He has a lot of faith in me and I have a lot of faith in him. I met the group today and it looks like a great group of players, they were having fun in training and I'm looking forward to getting involved.

"I am happy to have the chance to play in the Barclays Premier League and I will give everything to help the team."

It had looked as though Pajtim Kasami would be on his way out of Fulham, but it appears that a technology problem could have got in the way of a move to Pescara.

The Switzerland Under-21 international wrote on Twitter 'why is everything going against me' with his agent later being reported as telling Sky Italia that the necessary paperwork may not have arrived on time.

"It's ridiculous that the internet connection has not been working correctly," Mino Raiola said.

"We completed all the documents before the deadline but we don't know if they arrived in time."
</story:content>

 Arsene Wenger first made a case for his Arsenal defence and then did something about it, signing Malaga fullback Nacho Monreal on a long-term contract.

	<story:content>
Arsene Wenger first made a case for his Arsenal defence and then did something about it, signing Malaga fullback Nacho Monreal on a long-term contract.

Wenger lost another defender, Kieran Gibbs, for three weeks to a thigh injury during the 2-2 draw with Liverpool - a game during which the Gunners displayed the defensive frailties that have blighted them all season.

Wenger's response was to do an out-of-character piece of late business, paying an undisclosed fee for 26-year-old Spain international Monreal as the clock struck 11.

"We are delighted that Nacho Monreal has agreed to join us. We have been monitoring him for some time now and are really pleased that we've been able to agree this move today," Wenger said.

"Monreal is a strong left-sided defender with good experience at both club and international level. He is a technically gifted player, a good crosser in the final third and strong in the air.

"He will add quality to our squad and of course, to our defensive unit. We all look forward to him playing for us."

The deal remains subject to the completion of what the club describes as a formal registration process, but does represent an unusual move from Wenger.

He has rarely dealt so close to the deadline, but the injury suffered by Gibbs seems to have forced his hand.

Monreal, a former Osasuna academy graduate, signed for Malaga for £6 million ($9.15 million) in 2011 after making an impression with his hometown club, for which he made 127 appearances.

He made his debut for Spain in a 2009 friendly against FYR Macedonia and has gone on to win nine caps for the national side.

He should add some steel to a much-maligned Arsenal back four - a defensive line that was bailed out by Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott against Liverpool.

Arsenal made a number of catastrophic errors and was fortunate to only be 2-0 down when the comeback started, and according to striker Lukas Podolski, it cannot keep letting teams get a jump on it.

"It is a problem in the last matches that we are losing a goal and then coming from behind," he said.

"We must start strong from the first minute and score the first goal.

"In the last few weeks that has always been the problem, that we have to fight and come back.

"However, when you are 2-0 down and you come back like against Liverpool it feels like three points, and this is the way we have been playing recently."

Arsenal remains sixth, four points behind Tottenham Hotspur and three off fifth-placed Everton in the race to secure UEFA Champions League qualification once again.

Podolski, though, insists the team has what it takes to overhaul its rivals and even catch third-placed Chelsea, which has an eight-point advantage over Arsenal.

"We must fight for the Champions League places and this is our focus. We want third place and we have a lot of matches to play," he said.

"We are in the FA Cup and the Champions League, but the focus must be on the Premier League.

"Of course we wanted to finish first, but we lost a lot of points in the first half of the Premier League and now the difference is too big.

"All the other teams are really strong so we must fight in every game."
</story:content>

 Stoke City has completed the signing of England goalkeeper Jack Butland from Birmingham City.

	<story:content>
Stoke City has completed the signing of England goalkeeper Jack Butland from Birmingham City.

The Championship club accepted an undisclosed fee from the Potters for the 19-year-old, with the keeper set to stay at Birmingham on loan until the end of the season.

Butland had earlier rejected talks with Chelsea because of his desire to play regular first-team football and had also been linked with Liverpool, Fulham, Newcastle United and Manchester City in this window.

Butland joined the Birmingham academy aged 14 and made his first-team
breakthrough this season after a successful loan at Cheltenham Town.

His rise through the ranks also saw him become England's youngest
ever goalkeeper when he won his first senior cap in a friendly against
Italy last August.

Both Everton and Southampton tried to sign the talented teenager last
northern summer after he was called up to the England squad for EURO 2012 after
third-choice goalkeeper John Ruddy broke his finger.
Butland told Sky Sports News he decided to move to Stoke as it 'ticked all the boxes'.

He said: "I feel very good. I'm glad to get it done and it's the next step of my career and I'm looking forward to it.

"I tried not to get that in my head (about a move in this window)
because anything can happen in football and I decided just see what came
of it.

"I feel very lucky to come to a great club. It just ticked all the boxes for me.

"I've come to a solid club who are doing well in the Premier League
with great fans. The staff around the club, the goalie coach and the
manager, I can see it is a very professional environment and I am
looking forward to getting to work with them."

Stoke manager Tony Pulis said of the deal: "This is a fantastic
signing for the club because Jack is the best young keeper in the
country with an outstanding future ahead of him in the game and we are
delighted to bring him here.

"It is important that we build for the future and this adds to the
strong nucleus of young players which we have within the squad. Both
this signing and the arrival of Brek Shea are significant long term
investments."

It was the last piece of business of the transfer window for the
Potters, who also completed the signing of FC Dallas winger Brek Shea
for £2.5 million ($3.8 million), with Matthew Upson leaving on loan to Championship side Brighton & Hove Albion and Rory Delap moving to Barnsley on loan.

Earlier, Pulis travelled to Wembley to help secure Shea's work permit in a bid to complete the deal.

Pulis said of Shea's capture: "It's fantastic news that we have been able to push through the deal.

"Brek is a very, very exciting player, and one who we firmly believe
could go on to become an outstanding player for this football club."

Speaking of Upson's departure, Pulis said: "Matty has been a
fantastic professional throughout his time here and an influential
figure in the dressing room.

"He now has a chance to play some regular first-team football. It's a
great opportunity for both Matty and Brighton, so we wish him all the
best."
</story:content>

David Beckhamstole the show on transfer deadline day by agreeing to joinParis Saint-Germain.

	<story:content>
David Beckham stole the show on transfer deadline day after he signed for Paris Saint- Germain and promised to donate his entire salary to charity.

The former England captain signed a five-month deal with the Ligue 1 leaders after turning down offers from England, and his generous offer could see a Paris children's charity receive up to $3 million.

"We decided on something quite unique. In this time I won't receive any salary. My salary will go to a local children's charity in Paris," said Beckham, who joined PSG as a free agent after leaving Major League Soccer side the Los Angeles Galaxy in December.

"That's one of the things we are very excited about and proud to do and something I'm not sure has been done before.

"To be able to give a huge sum to a children's charity in Paris, it's very special."

Just hours before the transfer window shut, the 37-year-old former England captain, a free agent since ending a six-year spell with Los Angeles Galaxy before Christmas, headed to Paris for a medical.

In the Premier League, West Bromwich Albion's wantaway striker Peter Odemwingie moved the attention away from QPR's record signing Christopher Samba after he turned up at the west London club unannounced.

Samba joined the Rs from Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala for a record fee earlier in the day, while Odemwingie arrived at Loftus Road without permission from his club, confident of securing himself a deal.

A QPR spokesman confirmed to Press Association Sport that Odemwingie was denied access at Loftus Road out of respect to West Brom, while the Baggies reacted quickly by releasing a statement.

"The club can confirm they have held further discussions with QPR today but those talks have so far proven fruitless and no agreement has been reached," it read.

"Albion would also like to make clear that Peter has not been given permission to speak to QPR about a potential move."

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jermaine Jenas did sign an 18-month permanent deal with QPR, while midfielder Alejandro Faurlin joined Italian side Palermo on loan.

Andros Townsend also joined the Rs from Spurs on loan until the end of the season as Harry Redknapp looks to safeguard the club's top flight status.

Arsenal managed to complete the signing of Spanish defender Nacho Monreal on a 'long-term contract' for an undisclosed fee from Malaga just before the window closed.

Stoke was busy as they splashed out $3.8 million on United States winger Brek Sheafrom FC Dallas and signed England goalkeeper Jack Butland for an undisclosed fee.

Shea signed a four-and-a-half-year contract at the Britannia Stadium after the club made a successful appeal for a work permit earlier today, while 19-year-old Butland joined on a four-year deal from Birmingham - although he will immediately return to the Blues on loan until the end of the season.
</story:content>

 Tottenham Hotspur has announced that goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes has joined Bundesliga side Hoffenheim on loan until the end of the season.

	<story:content>
Tottenham Hotspur has announced that goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes has joined Bundesliga side Hoffenheim on loan until the end of the season.

Gomes had fallen well down the pecking order at Tottenham in the last two years after the arrivals of Brad Friedel and Hugo Lloris.

The Brazil international was keen to secure a move back to his homeland in order to try to win back his place in the national squad ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, but the 31-year-old has joined Hoffenheim after it made an approach in the last 24 hours.

Gomes joined from PSV in 2008 and went on to
become a regular under Harry Redknapp, but a series of high-profile
errors saw the former Spurs boss bring in Friedel and Gomes has struggled to get into the starting XI ever since.

The arrival of Hugo Lloris from Lyon last northern summer meant Gomes
dropped even further down the pecking order. His last appearance for
the London club came in November 2011 and he has rarely made the bench
in the last 18 months.

Gomes is just one of a number of squad players Tottenham manager
Andre Villas-Boas is looking to move on before the transfer window shuts.

David Bentley and Jermaine Jenas look set to move to Queens Park Rangers while
Tottenham has also given permission for Fulham to talk to midfielder
Tom Huddlestone.

Andros Townsend may also leave on loan, while young right-back Adam Smith has extended his loan spell at Millwall.

Villas-Boas played down talk of a last-ditch attempt to bring in a
marquee signing after the club's 1-1 draw at Norwich.

The Portuguese has been heavily linked with a move for Internacional
striker Leandro Damiao and other hitmen such as Lyon's Lisandro Lopez
and his team-mate Bafetimbi Gomis.

Internacional played down talk of Damiao leaving, with the
club's director of football Luis Cesar Souto de Moura telling Brazilian
website Lancenet: "Leandro Damiao will only leave if there is a very
quick negotiation, but no official offer has been made.

"The news involving interest for Leandro Damiao, especially from Tottenham, will always happen - they come and go.

"Damiao has a lot of quality, is a goalscorer, was the top scorer in
the Olympics and he is a very important player. Internacional understand
that it's extremely difficult, very difficult, for Leandro Damiao to
leave now."

Meanwhile, Tottenham confirmed that 19-year-old
midfielder Alex Pritchard has joined the Championship's bottom club
Peterborough United on loan until the end of the season.

Gomes was not the only Spurs player heading overseas either, with the
club later confirming that Ryan Mason had joined Lorient on loan until
the end of the season.

Mason, who has impressed in loan spells with Doncaster Rovers and Yeovil Town,
has made three first-team appearances this season and scored eight goals
in 10 development team games.
</story:content>

	<story:content>
French defensive midfielder Yacouba Sylla has declared himself ready and raring for Aston Villa's battle to avoid relegation after completing his move to the Premier League club from Clermont Foot.

The deadline-day capture of Sylla on a three-and-a-half-year contract is the only signing of the January transfer window for Villa, which is currently 19th in the top flight.

The 22-year-old is eligible to make his debut in this weekend's league clash with Everton at Goodison Park and Sylla says he cannot wait to help his new team in its bid to get out of trouble.

"I'm very excited about the prospect of playing for Aston Villa and also to be playing in the Premier League," said Sylla, who has represented France at Under-21 level.

"The manager (Paul Lambert) is building a dynamic and exciting young team here and there are players also with a lot of experience.

"I can't wait to fight for the club and help the club to climb the table.

"My first task will be to integrate myself with my new team-mates and to help those around me to grow and to build with them a strong team. I'm thrilled to be part of this.

"Playing at Villa Park will be unbelievable. It is a huge stadium with a great history and the crowd will be incredible. You dream about this when you become a footballer.

"I can hopefully help the team when we're defending against our opposition and to get the ball moving forward. I know the fans are very passionate and it will be great to get started as soon as possible.

"The club has made me feel very welcome already. The facilities at the training ground are first-class and I will be very proud when I put on the shirt and play my first game. I am looking forward to this very much."

Sylla, who has expressed his admiration for the 'strong and forceful' playing style of Newcastle United midfielder Cheick Tiote, has been with Ligue 2 outfit Clermont since 2009.

He has been linked with a number of teams around Europe, and having secured Sylla's signature, manager Paul Lambert will be hoping his new recruit can provide decent protection for a Villa defence which has looked incredibly vulnerable at times this season.

Lambert said: "Yacouba will add a bit of steel into the midfield which will help the other lads in there.

"Even though he's still a young guy, there were a few teams interested and closely monitoring him. I think he'll do well.

"Hopefully, he adapts quickly and gives us something to complement the guys around him.

"Physically, he's strong for it and, although he'll be new to it, he's raring to go."

Meanwhile, Villa defender Richard Dunne has suffered another setback to his groin injury.

Dunne has had three operations this season to try to cure the complaint and had finally returned to training.

But Lambert has confirmed the 33-year-old, who is out of contract in the northern summer, has sustained another blow to his hopes of a first-team comeback.

Lambert said: "It looks like Richard has got a setback. We will have to wait and see if that settles down again in the next few days.

"He has been training but came in one morning this week and felt something.''

Lambert had been hoping the experienced Dunne could play some part in Villa's relegation scrap despite having made only a handful of appearances in the last 12 months.

He suffered a shoulder injury which forced him to miss the final third of last season - except the final three games - and then picked up the groin problem when on EURO 2012 duty for Republic of Ireland.

Lambert also revealed midfielder Fabian Delph is sidelined with an ankle injury.

He said: "It's the same ankle he hurt against West Brom and Millwall but hopefully he might train at the end of the week.''
</story:content>

 David Beckham completed his move to Paris Saint-Germain and announced he will donate his entire salary - believed to be in the region of £2 million ($3.04 million) - to a local children's charity.

	<story:content>

David Beckham completed his move to Paris Saint-Germain and announced he will donate his entire salary - believed to be in the region of £2 million ($3.04 million) - to a local children's charity.

The former England captain, 37, signed a five-month contract with the Ligue 1 leader as a free agent after his five-and-a-half-year spell at Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy ended in December.

While Beckham's wage is unknown, it is expected to be around £100,000 ($151,952) a week.

Beckham explained his charitable gesture, saying: "We decided on something quite unique. In this time I won't receive any salary. My salary will go to a local children's charity in Paris.

"That's one of the things we are very excited about and proud to do.

"It's something exciting and something I'm not sure has been done before."

Beckham said he had not identified a suitable charity yet, and could not announce how much it would receive, except to say it would be a 'huge sum'.

"It's something the guys will decide, but it's a very good figure," Beckham said.

"That's one thing we're very excited about. To be able to give a huge sum to a children's charity in Paris, it's very special."

The former Manchester United, AC Milan and Real Madrid midfielder explained how PSG boss Carlo Ancelotti and sporting director Leandro had persuaded him to join the wealthy French giant.

Beckham knows both men from time he spent on loan at AC Milan.

"I'm very lucky. I'm 37 years old and I got a lot of offers - more now than I've probably had in my career. I'm very honoured by that," Beckham said.

"I chose Paris because I can see what the club are trying to do. I can see who the club are trying to bring in.

"It's an exciting city and now there's a club that's going to have a lot of success over the next 10, 20, 30 years.

"I'm very honoured I've been picked to be part of the future of PSG.

"Every club I've played for throughout the world I've been successful with.

"I was successful with Manchester United and always said I'd never want to play for another English club.

"I had a lot of history with Manchester United. It's the team I support and the team I dreamt of playing for.

"I'm very honoured by the offers I had from other Premier League clubs but I didn't want to play there unless it was for Manchester United."

The veteran midfielder has recently moved back to London with his family and has been training with Arsenal in a bid to regain his fitness.

His family will stay in London, with Beckham initially living out of a hotel.

Asked how much he could contribute on the pitch, Beckham went through a list, saying: "I have a lot of experience in the game; 37 years old; over 13 or 14 championships, trophies throughout my career; played for some of the biggest clubs in the world; played with some of the best players in the world; and still being successful at 37 years old and still being fit - I can run around and play like I could play when I was 21.

"I haven't lost any of my pace because I didn't have a lot of pace throughout my career, so that hasn't changed."

And while Beckham insisted PSG getting through the UEFA Champions League group stages was not the deciding factor in his choice, it offers him a chance to play at the highest level in club football again.

"It's a bonus that they're in the Champions League," he said. "I haven't played Champions League football for quite a few years.

"To be at a club that's in the Champions League is exciting for me.

"I've been lucky to win the Champions League once and know how important it is to the club.

"I'd have come if they weren't in the Champions League but I'm excited that they are."

Beckham's move to PSG emerged on Thursday morning when it was reported he was travelling to the French capital for a medical, with the player revealing the deal had been agreed in the early hours of the morning.

Club president Nasser Al-Khelaif, presenting Beckham, said: "David refused offers from a lot of clubs to be here.

"He's going to be with us at our project trying to reach our big dream to become one of the best clubs in Europe.

"David is a very professional player outside of the pitch.

"I'm sure he will be an asset to the club. I'm sure we'll win lots of things with David and I'm very happy to sit next to David here.

"This is a big day. We've been after him for a long time and finally we did it."
</story:content>

	<story:content>

(AC Milan fans turned out in droves to welcome Mario Balotelli to the club, but the mood turned sour when some sections of the crowd clashed with police)

Manchester City has confirmed that Mario Balotelli has completed his move to AC Milan.

The controversial striker travelled to the Italian city midweek and has now completed formalities.

It brings to an end a colourful, headline-filled two-and-a-half year spell in the Premier League for the talented but volatile player.

AC Milan club vice president Adriano Galliani, who accompanied Balotelli on the flight from England, told Italian media: "I certainly do not have to introduce Mario Balotelli.

"It is a dream come true and something that we all wanted, with the president Silvio Berlusconi at the forefront.

"With the arrival of Mario, we have strengthened our team a lot.

"We have worked so hard and Mario has been in our hearts for a long time and finally we have succeeded in signing him."

Balotelli
had been linked with Milan since the transfer window opened at the
start of the month with both Galliani and Berlusconi regularly speaking
about the player.

It
remains to be seen whether Balotelli will be available to make his
Milan debut in this weekend's game against Udinese at the San Siro.

He
has actually played little football in the past two months, making only
two substitute appearances since a dismal performance in the derby
against Manchester United in early December due to a combination of selection issues and illness.

During
that time he also threatened to take City to a Premier League tribunal
in a dispute over a club fine, only to drop the challenge, and had a
training-ground bust-up with manager Roberto Mancini.

They were not only the latest in a long line of off-field controversies during his time at the Etihad Stadium, but also the ones that finally hastened his exit.

He leaves City after scoring 30 goals in 80 appearances and helping the club win the FA Cup and Premier League title.

His
contribution was not insignificant but he will be equally well
remembered for his four red cards, clashes with team-mates, brushes with
discipline and other misdemeanours.
</story:content>

I'm very confident and excited to come and start to train with the team and be available to the manager

"I've been playing in Italy for two-and-a-half years and I believe I will adapt with ease here.

"I'm feeling very happy, it's a very important step in my career and I'm expecting to come here and play good football to give my contribution on the pitch.

"Liverpool is a great club with great players. We've always heard about Liverpool's history in Brazil.

"They are the club that have been interested in me and that have showed this interest so I know they believe in me and my football."

Coutinho's arrival, for a fee believed to be around £8.5 million ($12.88 million), takes Rodgers' spending close to £50 million ($75.77 million) since he arrived in the northern summer.

Rodgers told Sky Sports 2: "He is a very exciting young player, but he actually has a lot of experience for a 20-year-old and has played at the very highest level.

"He is great at the one-on-one, taking players on, and he has a goal in him."

Managing director Ian Ayre said securing Coutinho's signature, despite interest from the likes of Southampton, was another good deal for the club.

"It has been a successful transfer window for us, coming off the back of acquiring Daniel Sturridge from Chelsea and now Philippe from Inter Milan," he told liverpoolfc.com

"I think that bodes well for us for the rest of the season and the future.

"We certainly fought off strong competition from others. In the early parts of discussions, I know Inter Milan were reluctant.

"But we did some good work, the whole team that work around this got involved and I'm pleased to say we secured him."
</story:content>

 Yoan Gouffran embarked upon his Newcastle United career confident relegation is not on the agenda, while Nancy fullback Massadio Haidara has become Alan Pardew's latest signing.

	<story:content>
Yoan Gouffran embarked upon his Newcastle United career confident relegation is not on the agenda.

The 26-year-old striker signed a four-and-a-half-year deal at St James' Park after completing a move for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of £1.4 million ($.211 million), from Bordeaux.

He arrived with the Magpies sitting just two points clear of the bottom three and facing a six-pointer at fellow struggler Aston Villa on Tuesday evening (Wednesday morning AEDT).

However, Gouffran, Alan Pardew's third January signing after compatriots Mathieu Debuchy and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa - he was followed through the door by a fourth in the shape of 20-year-old Nancy fullback Massadio Haidara - is not at all concerned that that situation will persist.

"I am not worried at all," Gouffran said. "I know the players who play here at Newcastle already. They are fantastic players.

"Newcastle isn't in the position it should be in the league. Whether it's myself or the other players in the team, we are going to try our utmost to make sure we can climb up the league to where we should be.

"I think with the players Newcastle have, we can realistically be aiming to finish at least in the top eight."

Gouffran's recruitment addressed one of the more pressing issues facing Pardew this month after the departure of leading scorer Demba Ba for Chelsea.

The Magpies have scored just twice in the four games since Ba left for Stamford Bridge and, with Papiss Cisse struggling for form, greater potency was a must as the manager drew up his wish-list.

Having seen Queens Park Rangers counterpart Harry Redknapp gazump him to land first-choice Loic Remy, Pardew will be relieved to have finally got a body in, and the newcomer is confident he can be a hit on Tyneside.

Asked what qualities he will bring to the club, Gouffran said: "Speed. I am fast and I score goals."

Ba's return of 29 goals in his 18 months at St James' will be a hard act to follow, but the Frenchman is far from daunted by the task of attempting to follow in his footsteps and form a partnership with Cisse.

He said: "There's not really any added pressure. Yes, I am an attacker, yes, I want to score goals, but we both have different styles of play.

"I don't really think it's fair to draw any comparisons between both of us. Each player has his own style. Each to his own.

"Papiss Cisse and I played against each other when he was at Metz in France and he is someone who has really made a lot of progress here at Newcastle and he has scored some great goals.

"I had a chat with him this morning for the first time. We get on really well. He's a great guy and I have no worries that we can definitely play together well."

The arrival of France Under-21 international Haidara, who has signed a five-and-a-half-year deal, came as a further boost to Pardew.

Pardew said: "Massadio is very highly thought of in France and he's somebody who our scouting team have been greatly impressed by.

"At the age of 20, he will only continue to get better but he's already played a lot of games in his country's top division and represented France at Under-19, Under-20 and Under-21 level.

"He's strong and quick and we are looking forward to seeing him develop here."

Haidara added: "It was the desire of the club to sign me up which was the most important factor.

"It was nothing to do with the league position. It was really all about the club's desire and willingness to sign me up.

"Also, I like the club's ambition to strengthen the whole team so we can improve our league position. That's what appealed to me, so I didn't hesitate."

Newcastle's spending spree is unlikely to end just yet, with Toulouse midfielder Moussa Sissoko due in the north east to tie up his move after his current employer confirmed that a deal has been agreed.

A statement from Toulouse read: "He has reached agreement with Newcastle for a permanent transfer that takes effect today."

As well as the new additions, Pardew is desperate to hold onto skipper Fabricio Coloccini despite the 31-year-old's intention to return to South America because of a personal problem.

Coloccini trained on Thursday morning amid claims he was ready to down tools and not play for the club again, but having resisted attempts by his representatives to free him from his contract, the Magpies are still hoping to retain his services for the time being at least.
</story:content>

We now want to integrate him as quickly as possible into the team."

Macheda is available to Stuttgart coach Bruno Labbadia immediately and could make his debut against Bayern Munich this weekend, although with Vedad Ibisevic back from suspension, he may have to make do with a watching brief as he settles into his new environment.

The Italian striker will wear the number 14 shirt for the Bundesliga club.
</story:content>

He will now be charged with scoring the goals Newcastle needs to climb away from the relegation battle at the foot of the Premier League.

Gouffran said: "I am really proud to have joined this fantastic club.

a new challenge.

	<story:content>
Queens Park Rangers boss Harry Redknapp believes Loic Remy has the potential to become a world-class striker after the club confirmed his signing from Marseille for a club record fee.

The France international signed a four-and-a-half-year deal at Loftus Road after choosing the Premier League basement boy over Newcastle United.

"I'm delighted to bring him in, he's a great buy for us," Redknapp told the club's official website. "I didn't think we'd get him to be honest but (chairman) Tony Fernandes worked ever so hard on this. He wouldn't give up on it, and it's great that we now have him here with us.

"He's always been a player I've admired. I've watched him on so many occasions throughout the last few years. I actually spent three or four hours with him last year so he knew what I thought of him, and I think that was important.

"He's quick, can score goals and makes great runs. His movement is excellent. He's got the potential to be a really outstanding striker.''

Remy, who has four goals in 17 games for France, is eligible to make his QPR debut against West Ham United this weekend, subject to receiving international clearance.

He said: "Harry played a big part in me coming here. I spoke to him and Tony Fernandes at length and they made it clear they wanted me here. They gave me the right motivation to join QPR.

"I want to develop my game here. This season the objective is to stay up but beyond that we have greater objectives.

"After seven years in France, this is the right time for me to pursue a new challenge in the Premier League - the best league in the world.

"I am confident I can adapt to the Premier League. My main characteristics have taken me to the level I am at today but I am keen to keep improving in the Premier League.''

Meanwhile, FA Cup hero Jay Bothroyd wants to prove to Redknapp he has a future at QPR despite Remy's arrival.

The 30-year-old striker was loaned to Sheffield Wednesday by former boss Mark Hughes at the start of the season but returned to Loftus Road two weeks ago and marked his comeback with the only goal in the 1-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion in an FA Cup third-round replay.

"I am really happy. It was my first start after coming back and I was happy with my performance," the former England international said.

"I was surprised to get a start but I have been working hard in training. My mentality has always been when I get an opportunity to do well.

"Everyone knows Harry is a very honest man and very fair. He hasn't closed the door on anyone.

"He said to me 'Keep your head down work hard, everyone knows you have the ability, you have to show it'. That was the opportunity I wanted, that's all you can hope for in football.

"I want to be here and stay with QPR. I want to help the club. I'm determined to be here, work hard for my spot.

"Since I have been back, it is clear everyone has an opportunity and it is a clean slate. If you can impress the manager, he will give you an opportunity."

The win followed on from a 1-0 victory at Chelsea and a goalless draw with Tottenham Hotspur, and Redknapp says he cannot fault the approach of the players since his arrival.

"It is now three clean sheets on the spin now which is encouraging, with the win at Chelsea and the draw at Tottenham and now the cup win," Redknapp said.

"At least we are picking up some good results and some clean sheets. We are getting the best out of the players at the moment.

"There are certain parts of the team that can improve in terms of aspects of our play but it is not easy.

"We are getting the best out of what we have and they have been as good as gold. I can't fault the effort they are putting in."
</story:content>

	<story:content>
Midfielder Erik Paartalu is joining the A-League exodus to China with Brisbane Roar confirming a transfer fee has been agreed with Tianjin Teda.

Subject to a medical in China next week, Paartalu will join the Chinese Super League club immediately on a two-year deal to draw to an end his highly successful spell in Brisbane.

Not at his best in a struggling Roar team this campaign, Paartalu was banished by Roar coach Mike Mulvey to train with Roar's National Youth League team on Tuesday morning as his future remained uncertain.

Just hours later, one of the mainstays of Brisbane's historic back-to-back A-League championship winning teams under Ange Postecoglou, was announced to be on his way out before his contract expires at season's end.

Paartalu played 85 consecutive times for Roar, which included all six of Brisbane's inaugural AFC Champions League campaign games and was an ever-present member of the team since his arrival from Scottish side Greenock Morton in 2010.

"The history books will always mark Erik's on field contribution in helping secure Brisbane's first two Championship trophies," Mulvey said.

Parrtalu will be remembered best by Roar fans for his last-ditch extra-time goal in the 2011 decider against Central Coast Mariners that forced a penalty shootout Brisbane won.

"He has been very professional in my time at the club and shown a commitment in helping the club turn things around," Mulvey said.

"He is moving on and we now need to concentrate on the players who remain at the club.

"We wish Erik all the best for his future."

Roar General Manager Sean Dobson said the club would always support the ambitions of its players.

"However, we will never stand in the way of a player who wants a fresh challenge in their career," he said.

"At this point in time Erik believes this is a move which can benefit his football career and we wish him all the best on his new path."

Eighth-place Roar has made a number of changes to its squad since Mulvey supplanted Rado Vidosic as coach with the arrivals of Socceroos defender Jade North and teenage attacker Julius Davies and the departure of Rocky Visconte to Western Sydney Wanderers - which Brisbane hosts on Sunday in Week 17 of the A-League.

Winger Nick Fitzgerald will see out the year at Roar before he returns to Central Coast Mariners on a two-year deal.
</story:content>
