<story:content>
Napoli head coach Walter Mazzarri pledged to restore the Azzurri to winning ways in Serie A despite overseeing defeat to his club's "bete noire" in Verona on Sunday.

The Azzurri lost a first league game since December 16 as goals from Boukary Drame and Cyril Thereau handed Chievo Verona a 2-0 win - Napoli's third straight loss at the Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi.

Edinson Cavani went on to miss a penalty as league leaders Juventus pulled nine points clear at the top with a 1-0 victory over Catania, but Mazzarri predicts a positive, and immediate, reaction from his players.

He told sscnapoli.it: "We have never been lucky in Verona. They scored on their first attempt and then we were out of it.

"Chievo are definitely our bete noire as we have not won here for three years. But every season brings moments like this and we must overcome them.

"We are still second in the table, we are playing in a great league and we are two points ahead of AC Milan.

"If you consider the glass as half full, we have done many good things. We have collected many more points than we had at this stage last year."

"The group is solid and the lads believe in themselves, and starting from next Sunday against Atalanta we will be ready to start afresh.

"A match like today's can happen but we know how to react. There are still many games to play and we can do well."

Chievo, meanwhile, took a significant step towards securing its place in the top flight as three more valuable points built an eight-point cushion on the relegation zone.

And Flying Donkeys head coach Eugenio Corini admitted taking tips from Juve, who secured a 1-1 draw at Napoli last week, when preparing his players for Sunday's game.

"We played well, especially in the first half," he told La Repubblica. "We left our opponents very little room to manoeuvre.

"I used a five-man defence after watching Napoli-Juventus and we've used a similar system to Juve in the last few matches.

"So I decided to take that approach again here and it paid off."
</story:content>

	<story:content>
Juventus striker Alessandro Matri believes Sunday's 2-1 victory at Chievo proved the Bianconeri has what it takes to keep Napoli at bay.

The Azzurri briefly joined Juve at the top of the Serie A table on 49 points following Saturday's home win over Catania, but Matri edged his side back out in front with a stunning first-half opener in Verona.

Stephan Lichtsteiner then seized on a Matri pass to score what proved to be the winner before Cyril Thereau's second-half response set up a tense finale.

After helping Juve to push through the 50-point barrier, Matri told juventus.com: "It felt like a great goal. Strange though, because normally when I strike it well, I don't score.

"But today it went well and we provided a great response to Napoli's win. These are the games that win you championships, not the direct encounters."

New signing Nicolas Anelka was an unused substitute in Verona and Matri hopes it stays that way after giving his coach Antonio Conte food for thought with his performance.

"Everyone wants to play, but unfortunately there are only 11 players on the pitch," he added. "As in every team, there is a pecking order.

"All you can do is give your all and give the coach something to think about. I'm not satisfied with being a reserve, I'm working to play in the starting XI.

"Pecking orders have to be respected, but you can try and change them."

Lichtsteiner, who smashed home a rising finish three minutes before the break, said: "I'm consistently finding the target and I'm happy.

"Today's victory was very important for us. We dropped a lot of points in January, which was also down to an element of bad luck.

"We struggled a bit in the second half and could have handled things a little better after the restart.

"We're still top of the league, but we know we'll need to remain alert because Napoli are a great side, as are Lazio and Inter."

Chievo boss Eugenio Corini was encouraged by the 40 evenly-contested minutes that followed Thereau's goal.

He said: "I expected Juve to be this attacking, but we respected them too much in the first half. It was better after the break when we made them worry."
</story:content>

Corini replaces Di Carlo at Chievo

 Chievo has confirmed it has sacked coach Domenico Di Carlo and appointed Eugenio Corini as his replacement.

	<story:content>
Chievo has confirmed it has sacked coach Domenico Di Carlo and appointed Eugenio Corini as his replacement.

The Serie A side announced in a brief statement that it was dispensing with Di Carlo's services just six games into the new season.

Chievo lost 4-1 at fellow struggler Palermo last weekend to slip into the bottom three.

Chievo has lost its last five league games after starting the campaign with a victory.

Di Carlo, 48, returned for his second spell in charge of the Verona
club in June last year - he first led it between 2008 and 2010 before
less than a year in charge of Sampdoria - and guided it to a
respectable 10th-placed finish last season.

A statement from Chievo read: "The
club offer our heartfelt gratitude to the coach and his staff, not only
for the excellent results achieved during his three seasons at Chievo, but especially for their commitment, professionalism and dedication."

His replacement, Corini, spent five years as a player with Chievo from 1998 to 2003.

This job is his first as a coach in the top flight after spells in
charge of lower-league sides Portosummaga, Crotone and, most recently,
Frosinone.

His first game will be at home to Sampdoria this weekend.

Corini, who retired as a player due to an Achilles tendon injury in
2009, could barely contain his delight at his unveiling near Lake Garda.

Quoted in the Gazzetta dello Sport, the Brescia-born coach told
reporters: "This is an amazing opportunity for me and I'm grateful to
the club.

"They stayed loyal to me when I was going through a tough time as a
player - after a serious injury - and I won't disappoint them this time.

"I'm lucky to have worked under 'masters' like Gigi Del Neri and
Francesco Guidolin, so I'll try to apply what they've taught me in the
best possible way."

Corini took training for the first time on Tuesday afternoon and has
recruited Reggiana assistant coach Salvatore Lanna to his coaching
staff in Verona.

"I already knew a lot about Chievo, I knew about the situation and all about the individual players," the 42-year-old added.

"That's why the directors called me when they decided to change (the coach).

"We start with the challenge of Sampdoria and I'm confident.

"The squad is a good one and we have everything here that we need to survive."
</story:content>

	<story:content>
Chievo put a huge dent in second-placed Napoli's Serie A title hopes as
it completed the double over its opponent this season with a 2-0 win in
Verona.

And the pressure is mounting on Juventus coach Luigi Delneri as his team lost for the fifth time in eight games since the turn of the year with a 2-1 reverse at Palermo.

Davide Moscardelli and Gennaro Sardo scored the goals to down an out of sorts Napoli, who dropped to five points off leaders AC Milan, who drew 0-0 with Lazio on Tuesday.

Napoli coach Walter Mazzarri had warned his team before the game that it always struggles against Chievo, and it had already been beaten 3-1 at home, but the players didn't heed his advice.

On six minutes Sardo was off target with a header and soon after Davide Mandelli shot just wide.

Napoli created nothing going forward and Chievo deservedly went ahead on 20 minutes with a brilliant goal from Moscardelli, who took down a Sergio Pellissier chipped pass in the area and then curled a peach of a left footer around a defender and in off the far post.

It should have been two on 36 minutes as Napoli goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis charged from his area to deny Pellissier, but with the simple task of lobbing the ball back over the goalkeeper and into the unguarded net, Moscardelli missed the ball completely.

Incredibly, in injury time Napoli had a similar chance with Chievo goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino left stranded in no-man's land after a mistake by Marco Andreoli, but Serie A top goalscorer Edinson Cavani, with an identical task to Moscardelli's earlier one, scuffed his shot horribly off target.

Any hope Napoli had of improving after the break was quashed on 50 minutes as Sardo won a 50-50 challenge and then somehow ran through three defenders before cleverly slotting the ball past De Sanctis.

It took the visitor until 10 minutes from time to finally threaten as Christian Maggio crossed for Cavani who headed just wide.

But five minutes from time Moscardelli wasted a chance to close out the game on the counter, blazing over from eight yards.

Palermo leapfrogged its opponent with the win in Sardinia, leaving sorry Juventus eighth in Serie A.

The host took an early lead, just as it had done against Inter Milan at the weekend, as Javier Pastore crossed from deep and Fabrizio Miccoli took the ball in his stride before finishing under goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon from a tight angle.

Giulio Migliaccio then headed home a Mattia Cassani cross after a short corner to make it 2-0.

Claudio Marchisio got Juventus back into the match as he finished through a crowd of bodies after goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu had made a mess of another corner.

Although it had blown a 2-0 lead against Inter, this time Palermo held out.

Roma missed the chance to jump above city rival Lazio into third as it was held 1-1 at home to lowly Brescia, while in-form Udinese failed to move into the UEFA Champions League places as it was surprisingly held 1-1 at home to Bologna.
</story:content>

	<story:content>
Bari dragged itself off the bottom of the Serie A table as it picked up a point in a drab goalless draw at Chievo.

Giampiero Ventura's men moved above Parma by a solitary point as it
arrested a horrific five-game losing run and kept just its second
clean sheet of the season.

Chievo started the better of the sides and could have taken a
22nd-minute lead when Pablo Granoche skipped past Alessandro Parisi and
centred, but the waiting Mariano Bogliacino could only head over.

Parisi went close at the other end with a free-kick that was
smothered by Stefano Sorrentino, before Bostjan Cesar fluffed his lines
as he tried to get his head on a Bogliacino cross into the box.

Chances were few and far between for Bari and it could not afford
to be wasteful, but that was what it was as Edgar Alvarez allowed
Sorrentino to get a hand to his rifled drive after taking in a pass from
Paulo Vitor Barreto.

Chievo looked the more dangerous and Davide Moscardelli eluded his
marker but could only head wide, before Massimo Donati struck wide for
Bari after the restart.

Barreto then had a shot of his own that Sorrentino did well to keep
out, before Bari's Salvatore Masiello nearly put through his own
goal from Gennaro Sardo's cross.

Chievo's Michele Marcolini then had one last attempt at breaking the
deadlock, but his long-range strike was saved by Jean Francois Gillet.

absentee when the Rossoneri host Chievo in Serie A action this weekend.

The Swede is struggling with a stomach complaint and is a major doubt for Milan, which is attempting to make it three league wins on the spin as it bids to close the two-point gap to competition leader Lazio.

Milan faces Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in the Champions League next week and the club's top scorer may err on the side of caution this weekend in order to be fit for that game.

"I've had stomach cramps and I haven't been able to train," said Ibrahimovic. Lazio joined Inter Milan at the top of the Serie A standings after
Mauro Zarate's solitary goal saw the Rome side beat Chievo in Verona.

	<story:content>
Lazio joined Inter Milan at the top of the Serie A standings after
Mauro Zarate's solitary goal saw the Rome side beat Chievo in Verona.

Zarate struck in the 69th minute to hand the visiting side its third win
in four games.

The outcome sees Lazio go level on 10 points with Inter, which
lost 1-0 at Roma.

Brescia's three-match winning run came to an end as it lost 2-1 at
Bari.

Bari showed it had suffered no lingering effects from the 4-0
beating it received at Inter in midweek by storming into a 16th-minute
lead through Emmanuel Rivas.

Brescia's Panagiotis Kone equalised on the half-hour mark before
Paulo Barreto converted from the penalty spot in the 55th minute after
being brought down by Brescia defender Gilberto Martinez.

The home side held on without major scares to record its first
triumph since the opening win of the Serie A season at Juventus on
August 29.

Napoli came from behind to pick up its second consecutive away win
in style with a 4-1 triumph at Cesena.

Marco Parolo put the host team in front in the 48th minute and, with the
help of its inspirational goalkeeper, it looked like it was going
to upset Napoli like it had AC Milan in its first home game of the
season.

But Ezequiel Lavezzi levelled in the 72nd minute and a Marek Hamsik
penalty and two late goals from Edison Cavani earned Napoli all three
points.

Catania and Bologna continued their solid starts to the new season
with a battling 1-1 draw at Stadio Angelo Massimino.

Veteran striker Marco Di Vaio opened the scoring for the visitor
after 40 minutes when he slammed home on the rebound after seeing his
penalty saved by Mariano Andujar.

The host pulled level through a Miguel Britos own goal after 65
minutes and although Catania looked the most likely to add to the
scoring, Bologna's backline held firm for a deserved point.

Second-half goals from Adem Ljajic and Lorenzo De Silvestri earned
Fiorentina its first win of the Serie A season against Parma.

Ljajic opened the scoring with a 61st-minute penalty and De
Silvestri's deflected effort made the game safe.

Massimo Maccarone secured a richly-deserved point for Palermo against
10-man Lecce with a stoppage-time equaliser at the Stadio Renzo
Barbera.

Guillermo Giacomazzi put the visitor ahead in the eighth minute and,
after Mauricio Pinilla had what would have been a leveller incorrectly
ruled out for offside on the stroke of half time, Daniele Corvia doubled
Lecce's advantage at the start of the second period.

However, Pinilla gave Palermo hope six minutes later and, after
Giacomazzi was sent off 10 minutes from time, Maccarone salvaged a point
for the host with his first goal for the club.

Udinese picked up its first point of the season after grinding out a
goalless draw at Sampdoria this afternoon.

The visitor came into the contest with nothing to show for its
efforts from the first four games of the season but return east having
broken its duck at the Comunale Luigi Ferraris.

And a draw was the least it deserved for an enterprising display
against a Samp side which has now won just one of its opening five
games.
</story:content>
