Former Socceroos striker Alistair Edwards will this week be appointed as the assistant to Football Federation Australia national technical director Han Berger.
It is understood Edwards will be groomed for the top job, with the FFA keen to eventually have a local man heading up the game's development.
The appointment marks another significant Australian coaching and technical posting within the FFA, following Gary Van Egmond’s controversial recent selection as head coach at the Australian Institute of Sport.
Edwards, who scored five goals in 22 International matches for Australia, has been in the national coaching system for six years, guiding the young Matildas to the 2006 under-20 World Cup in Russia.
The 41-year-old has extensive experience as both a player and coach in Asia and has completed his masters of business administration.
Edwards is currently finishing his FIFA pro licence in Sydney.
