Juan Sebastian Veron scored a late winner as Estudiantes edged reigning champions Lanus 1-0 to climb up to second in the Argentinian Clausura.
Roberto Sensini's side enjoyed the better of the chances but were kept at bay for much of the game by Lanus goalkeeper Carlos Bossio.
But with four minutes to go, Veron secured the three points for his side with a powerful shot from outside the box.
There was further disappointment for Lanus in stoppage time when midfielder Matias Fritzler was shown the red card.
"Both team know each other very well as we have also faced them in the Copa Libertadores so we expected it to be a close match," said Veron.
"We deserved to win by a bigger margin as we had a number of clear chances in the first half. However, the important thing is that we got the three points," added the former Manchester United player.
In Rosario, Newell's Old Boys beat Argentinos Juniors 2-0 to move up to third place.
German Re broke the deadlock when he put away a loose ball just before half-time and Paraguayan striker Alejandro Da Silva doubled the lead with a header four minutes into the second half.
