Brosque has been in fine form in the A-League this season and wins his first international call-up in four seasons after Japan-based striker Josh Kennedy was forced to withdraw due a back injury.
"I'm rapt. It was totally unexpected but I can’t wait to join the rest of the team," a shocked Brosque said before boarding a plane to Muscat.
"Making the national team is something I haven’t been thinking about but I guess it was always in the back of my mind. I’ve just been trying to concentrate on playing well and consistently with Sydney FC.
“I’m looking forward to training with the team for a week in Oman and I’ll be looking to learn from the experience and if I get a chance to get on the pitch I’ll be giving it my best shot."
Brosque won the last of his four caps in 2006.
The move is another snub for Celtic striker Scott McDonald, whose two goals at the weekend were not enough to earn him a recall after he was left out of Pim Verbeek's original squad named last week.
Verbeek also added Aston Villa's Shane Lowry - who is on loan to Plymouth Argyle - to his squad.
Australia and Oman are joint leaders of Group B with four points each from three matches.
