Cahill and Kewell headline bloated Socceroos

1 October 2008-SBS

Dynamic duo Tim Cahill and Harry Kewell are the star attractions in an expanded 35-man Socceroos squad for the 2010 World Cup qualifier against Qatar on October 15.

Everton star Cahill is back in the national set-up for the first time in seven months nursing a broken foot while Kewell's form for Turkish giant Galatasaray has been oustanding - scoring five times in eight competitive games.

Pim Verbeek on Wednesday called up 13 A-League players including in-form Adelaide United goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic, defenders Robert Cornthwaite and Scott Jamieson and midfielder Paul Reid.

Sydney FC's Shannon Cole takes another huge step forward in his development after playing NSW Premier League football three months ago.

Central Coast Mariners trio Alex Wilkinson, Mile Jedinak and Matt Simon have earnt their place while as expected veteran defender Craig Moore has been recalled after coming out of international retirement.

Absent are the suspended Carl Valeri and Michael Beauchamp, who was injured in Aalborg's UEFA Champions League defeat to Manchester United, while Nicky Carle has been overlooked.

Verbeek may reduce his squad size early next week prior to the team’s assembly in Brisbane next Wednesday.
