Jets look for new talent

-AAP

Newcastle Jets star Joel Griffiths says his club will look to inject new blood into their side ahead of the 2009 Asian Champions League (ACL).

Jets coach Gary van Egmond has flown to Dubai to discover who the Jets will face when the group stage of the tournament is drawn on Wednesday.

Griffiths said van Egmond was hoping to bring in as many as five new players ahead of the March 11 kick-off date for the competition.

"I think (he's) still looking to bring four or five players in, just to strengthen the squad," he told AAP.

"I don't know what sort of players they are but only time will tell in that department."

The championship will be an opportunity to wipe the slate clean after a hugely disappointing A-League season for the Jets, Griffith said.

"The way we play is where we want to be, but the goals aren't coming," he said.

The Jets are currently bottom of the A-League ladder, having won just three matches so far this season.

"Obviously the season hasn't been the best season," Griffiths said.

"We have to find a formula really quick otherwise the ACL is going to be tough, really tough.

"Saying that, though, all the boys are pretty excited about the prospect of playing in Asia and they're up for the challenge."

Also attending Wednesday's draw will be Central Coast Mariners coach Lawrie McKinna.

The Mariners and the Jets will each be grouped with one club side from China, Japan and South Korea in the east-Asian side of the league.

Japan's reigning ACL champions and Adelaide United's conquerors Gamba Osaka will also be in the draw as well as South Korea's Suwon Bluewings and FC Seoul.

Fred still missing for Heart

Faltering Melbourne Heart will again have to do without inspirational captain Fred for Saturday's crucial A-League game at Newcastle.
