Bridge expects new faces

6 January 2009-PA Sport

Manchester City's first acquisition in the January transfer window Wayne Bridge does not expect to be the new boy at the club for very long.

The former Chelsea left-back, who completed his STG10million ($A20.42million) move from Stamford Bridge at the weekend, is eagerly anticipating manager Mark Hughes flexing the club's financial muscle to bring more stars to Eastlands.

After the takeover by the Abu Dhabi United Group earlier in the season Hughes can now finally spend the millions which have been made available to him.

Blackburn striker Roque Santa Cruz, whom Hughes signed for Blackburn last season, West Ham midfielder Scott Parker and forward Craig Bellamy - known to Hughes during his time as Wales manager and Rovers boss - have all been linked to the club.

Outside of the Premier League the latest big name to be linked with City is Juventus striker David Trezeguet.

The Frenchman joins a host of other top stars, which includes the likes of Inter Milan's Adriano, Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and Villarreal midfielder Marcos Senna, about whom speculation has been rife for the last month or so.

Bridge is relishing the opportunity to team up with City's current and future stars.

"There are some quality players here already and I'm looking forward to playing alongside them," he said

"There's a lot of talk of bringing more players in so I'm looking forward to that too.

"Obviously, and most importantly, I want to show the fans here and everyone around that I can do well at Manchester City.

"I'd like to think I'm coming into my prime. I've got a good engine and a good left foot so I'll be looking forward to showing that on the pitch."

Bridge said he fully bought into the plans which Hughes, with whom he played at Southampton, has for the future despite continuing speculation about the manager's long-term position.

"I know him quite well and when I spoke to him everything he said was positive and that's good to hear," said the 28-year-old.

"He was positive about me as well and that's nice as it gives me confidence so hopefully I'll be showing that on the pitch.

"I'm very impressed with the vision of the club and where it wants to go.

"Obviously it's going to take time but we're going to progress and keep doing so until we achieve big things."
