NYL: Glory on fire in the west

27 December 2009-SBS

Perth Glory extended their National Youth League winning run to six games with a crushing 4-0 victory over Newcastle Jets at ME Bank Stadium on Boxing Day.

On a hot summer's day, Glen Trifiro (52 and 68 mins) scored twice while Ludovic Boi (43 mins) and Reece Vittiglia (63 minutes) added singles for the hosts.

The three points lift Perth to 29, just two behind league leaders Central Coast Mariners and five clear of third place Adelaide United. Newcastle are seventh on 16 points.

Perth have now beaten Sydney FC, Central Coast Mariners, Brisbane Roar, Australian Institute of Sport, Gold Coast United and the Jets over the last six weeks in a stunning run of form.

“We’re trying to put a framework in place where people understand six or seven basic ideas in the style of how we want to play,” Glory coach Gareth Naven explained.

“I’ve told the players they must bring their own individual flair and resource to make sure that framework is effective and I think they’re doing that effectively across the pitch

“We’ve got squad that is fit and healthy and there is pressure to perform otherwise someone will step in and take your spot. That is a good thing and it is driving the group to achieve their best.”
