Jason Culina has been ruled out of the Socceroos' vital Asian Cup qualifying clash with Kuwait after sustaining a knee injury in Gold Coast United's 5-1 A-League win over Brisbane Roar on Saturday.
Coach Pim Verbeek has called up Central Coast Mariners midfielder Dean Heffernan as Culina's replacement for the January 6 (January 7 AEDT) encounter in Kuwait City.
Heffernan made his international debut against Indonesia in Jakarta earlier this year and was an unused substitute for the match against Kuwait in Canberra in March.
Kuwait and Australia currently sit on top of the Group B points table for the 2011 showpiece in Qatar.
The Socceroos are scheduled to play Indonesia in Brisbane in their final group match on March 3, 2010.
Sterjovski rules out Socceroos return
Perth Glory forward Mile Sterjovski says he won’t be coming out of international retirement to play for Australia against Saudi Arabia later this month.
