Stricken Metsu stands down

26 October 2012-PA Sport

Bruno Metsu has stepped down as manager of Lucas Neill's Al Wasl after being diagnosed with stomach cancer earlier this month.

Frenchman Metsu, who led Senegal to the 2002 World Cup, has been hospitalised since October 15, where he has been visited by former Al Wasl boss Diego Maradona.

"Due to his current health condition, Mr Bruno Metsu has requested to be relieved from his duties as head coach of Al Wasl," a club statement on itsTwitter page read.

"The Al Wasl Board has accepted Mr Metsu's request & thanked him for all he has given, wishing him a speedy recovery & best wishes."

Metsu was personally responsible for signing Australia skipper Neill to shore up his club's leaky defence.
