Top of the table... Perth Glory celebrates its winning goal in its opening W-League match. (Getty Images)
The W-League's traditional heavyweights kicked off the new season in modest fashion, leaving last season's struggler Perth Glory and Adelaide United sitting at the top of the table.
A pair of second-half goals saw Perth Glory, victims of a record 11-0 loss against Sydney FC last season, over-run Melbourne Victory 2-0 in stifling heat.
Boosted by the return of high-profile Matildas duo Collette McCallum and Kate Gill, Glory impressed from the outset before eventually securing all three points with goals from Gill and Marianna Tabain.
Newcastle Jets seemed set to make it a three-way tie at the top only to fall victim to a Sydney FC comeback inspired by recruits Sam Kerr and Ellyse Perry.
Newcastle was forced to settle for a 3-3 draw at Leichhardt Oval, despite holding a two-goal lead early in each half.
Two second-half goals in as many minutes from Kerr, both of which were set-up by Perry, saw the visitor pegged back.
Perry, who represented NSW Breakers in the women's Twenty20 cricket matches on Friday and Saturday, also provided the cross for Alanna Kennedy's opener for Sydney.
Perry has linked with her home-town club, after last year playing for champion Canberra United, while Kerr made the move across from Perth as the 2010 champion unveiled a new look line-up.
