Postecoglou vows to get it right

Victory is at the bottom of the league after defeats to Melbourne Heart and Brisbane Roar in its first two matches.

The 2-1 loss in the derby was dismissed as one of those days when things did not go Victory's way.

Yet the 5-0 hammering from Postecoglou's old proteges at Suncorp left no doubt that his stellar team had problems across the park.

Postecoglou turned Roar from a good and under-achieving side into a formidable two-time champion in three seasons in Brisbane.

The transformation was not instant, however, so Postecoglou is experienced enough not to lose any sleep over Victory's stuttering start to the league campaign.

”To a certain extent the difficulties at both clubs are similar … it's just a result of the nature of change,” Postecoglou said.

”We are changing personnel and our style of play … they are just different challenges.

”It took us a bit longer than nine months to complete the transformation in Brisbane.

”In my second year that gave us the first championship we were okay in the first half of the season but nothing spectacular.

”I expect Melbourne Victory to show signs of great improvement throughout the course of the year and get to where we want to be.”

That position seemed a million miles away last weekend when Rado Vidosic's men ran rings around a hopelessly outplayed Victory side.

”I don't think we have major problems,” Postecoglou protested.

”We are still in the process of changing things and last week we had significant players like Archie Thompson, Mark Milligan and Marco Rojas missing due to international duty.

”Even in Brisbane we struggled when we had Thomas Broich and a couple of others missing from the team.

”From my point of view I'm not going to worry too much about what happened in one particular game because I know we'll get it right eventually.

”It was a bad day for the club and credit to our opponent that was very good on the day.

”As I said, this is all part of the transformation we are going through at the moment.”

Postecoglou's men are at home to bitter rival Adelaide United on Friday and he recognises that victory over the league leader would go a long way towards appeasing the team's hordes of disappointed fans.

”That's the nature of football,” he said.

”Fortunes can turn very quickly with results and performances.

”The Adelaide match gives us an excellent opportunity to respond to our loss in Brisbane.”

Postecoglou is hoping that main striker Archie Thompson will bring his 'Socceroos form' to club football and help kick-start the season.

Thompson scored Australia's winner in the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Iraq in Doha midweek for his third goal in as many national team outings.

Thompson arrived in Melbourne on Thursday morning and lost no time joining up with his Victory squad at training.

”Archie trained well this morning and he is keen to play and he will start,” Postecoglou said.

”So there is no issue about Archie being ready.”

Postecoglou is also relishing a relatively quiet week leading up to the Adelaide match.

His first return to Brisbane after leaving the club soon after the grand final was punctuated by controversial comments in the media about his coaching credentials.

Some sections of the Suncorp crowd also vented their spleen at the man who was seen as a messiah only a few months ago.

At the end of the match, Postecoglou was seen briefly shaking rival coach Vidosic's hand before he made his way towards the dressing rooms as quick as he could.

”I was disappointed with the way last week went,” Postecoglou said.

”Everybody has the freedom to approach things the way they like and at the end of the day I treat people the way I treat myself.

”I believe in dignity and respect but as far as I'm concerned I cannot control other people's actions and I'm comfortable with that.

”All I will say is that Brisbane Roar is in the past and my present focus is Melbourne Victory.”
