Low backs Klose to break record

Germany coach Joachim Low has sung the praises of Miroslav Klose, who he fully expects to become Germany's all-time goalscoring record holder.

Klose is currently three shy of Gerd Muller's 68 strikes for Germany and he can move closer to that landmark when he leads the Germany line against Sweden at the Olympiastadion on evening (Wednesday morning AEDT).

"Every coach can be happy if he has a Miroslav Klose in his side," Low said. "I don't think there are many words to describe somebody who has scored 15 goals in three World Cups.

"That is an unrivalled achievement and it speaks volumes about him."

Klose was recently criticised by Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness, who claimed that most of the Lazio striker's goals had come against lesser nations, but that received short thrift from Low.

"Of course we do play the likes of Azerbaijan or Liechtenstein and so on, but Miro has shown over and over again that he can score important goals," added Low.

"He is one of our most important players. Just as long as he is not injured, he will break the record.

"He will be involved in all our qualifiers and I am certain he will make it."

Breaking records is not the former Bayern Munich striker's priority, though.

"I would never compare myself to Muller because what he has achieved for Germany is incomparable," said the 34-year-old.

"I have told him that personally once or twice and that is why I think it is a joke - I never want to compare myself to him.

"I personally don't make much of records. When I do finally hang up my boots, I will of course read how many games I played and how many goals I scored and it will make me proud, but I am not through with playing yet so that is just a distraction and I am only concentrating on what is important."

Klose's priority now is victory over Sweden, a result which would put six points between the two nations and take Germany a step closer to the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

"That is what I am aiming for," he said. "But it is too early to talk about decisive games. We know that Sweden are our toughest rivals in this group and we have two games against Kazakhstan to come, but we have got to win at home because you never know what can happen away."

Low's focus is not only on scoring goals but also how to prevent Zlatan Ibrahimovic from causing problems at the other end.

"The way they defend is textbook," said Low at a press conference. "It is always tough to score against them.

"They rely on this strong defence, and then they have Ibrahimovic up front to decide games.

"Their attacking play focuses a lot on Ibrahimovic and he is unpredictable and able to find the right solutions to difficult situations, and he is a key player in their team.

"We have got to ensure we stifle their build-up play so they don't get the ball to him and we must not give him any room."

Only an inch was given to him by a well-drilled Faroe Islands defence last week, but that was enough for the Paris Saint-Germain forward to create the equaliser and score the winner in a narrow 2-1 victory which left the Swedish press speculating about how many the national team will concede to a Germany side which put six past Republic of Ireland.

However, Germany only beat the Faroes 3-0 in its first group game and could be without Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira due to a thigh strain.

Captain Philipp Lahm is back, though, after sitting out a suspension against the Irish.
