Newcastle Jets has surpassed its membership goal of 11,000 members for the 2012-2013 A-League, the club announced.

The current tally of 11,007 eclipses the Jets’ previous record of 10,228 members set during 2011-2012.

For the second year running, the Jets have the second highest membership base in the A-League behind Melbourne Victory.

The figure also means the Jets have more members than many National Rugby League clubs.

Jets captain Jobe Wheelhouse thanked all those who have come on board to become members.

“Membership is crucial to the success of any football club and to have reached 11,000 members is a pretty phenomenal effort and a testament to the passion and loyalty of the Hunter community,” he said.

“It was great to see so many members in their caps and scarves at our first match this season and hopefully we can play in front of crowds like that every game at Hunter Stadium this year.

“Knowing we have that kind of support in the stands at home matches gives all of us players a lift.

“Our members and supporters are our 12th man and they always have been over the years, so it’s an honour to lead the boys out in front of them."

The Jets said they hoped to build the biggest membership base in the A-League.
