Great Britain's night of sporting nights ended in heartbreak when the men's football team bowed out of the Olympic quarter-finals in an all too familiar penalty shootout.

Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge missed the vital final spot kick for Great Britain which left Korea Republic needing only to convert its last kick, which it did, to progress to a dream semi-final against Brazil at Old Trafford.

Sturridge was clearly angry and upset as he made his way off the field, although it could be argued Aaron Ramsey was equally culpable as he also missed from the spot in normal time when the Wales midfielder had a chance to put Great Britain in front.

That Ramsey scored earlier in the game just heightened the frustration for a capacity crowd, who moments earlier had been celebrating three gold medals won in track and field at the Olympic Stadium.

Jessica Ennis (heptathlon), Greg Rutherford (long jump) and Mo Farah (men's 10 000 metres) sent the nation into hysteria, but the nation's poor international record in penalty shootouts came back to haunt it.

Brazil was made to work for its 3-2 win over Honduras with goals from Leandro Damiao (2) and star Neymar.

In the other semi-final Mexico will play Japan.

Japan accounted for Egypt 3-0 with goals from Kensuke Nagai, captain Maya Yoshida and Yuki Otsu.

Mexico, which beat Senegal 4-2, has goalkeeper and captain Jose Corona to thank for several fine saves.

The African nation took the central American side to extra-time, before conceding two late goals.
