Gold medal favourite United States, world champion Japan and Brazil all won their matches on the opening day of women's Olympic football, but all the talk was about an embarrassing mistake by organisers who displayed the South Korean flag instead of the North Korean one before a game in Glasgow.

The flag flap happened as Korea DPR prepared to play Colombia at Hampden Park. A Korea DPR player was introduced on the jumbo screen along with a picture of the South Korean flag, prompting the team to refuse to take the field and delaying the game start for more than an hour.

When it did come out, Korea DPR won 2-0 courtesy of a brace by Kim Song Hui who scored a goal in each half.

Earlier, Brazil striker Cristiane became the most successful goalscorer in Olympic women's football history as the South American side opened its 2012 campaign with a 5-0 thumping of Cameroon.

Cristiane grabbed the fourth goal late in the second half at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

It was her 11th Olympic goal, meaning she is now the all-time leading scorer in women's Olympic football, overtaking Birgit Prinz of Germany.

Other goals from Francielle and Renata Costa and two from star striker Marta sealed the win for the Beijing silver medallist Samba Queens.

Defending Olympic champion US continued the goalfest with a 4-2 win over France, while World Cup winner Japan got past Canada 2-1.

Great Britain launched its Olympic campaign with a 1-0 win over New Zealand in Cardiff.

Steph Houghton scored the only goal, curling home a superb 65th-minute free-kick which, given the nature of this 12-team competition, is almost enough to secure a quarter-final berth.

Sweden defeated South Africa 4-1 in the day's other game.

Seattle Sounders sinks Dallas

Eddie Johnson scored twice as Seattle Sounders posted a third straight Major League Soccer victory with a 4-2 win against Western Conference-leading FC Dallas.
