Australia captain Melissa Barbieri will take an extended break from football after revealing on Twitter she is pregnant.
The Matildas goalkeeper, who expressed her joy at the surprise news, is set to return to the W-League in May 2013.
"It's official: Bun. In. Oven. Buzzer/Timer set for 6th February 2013 Return to Playing circa May 2013 Future Mum&Dad stunned but elated," Barbieri posted on her Twitter page.
Barbieri's absence provides an opportunity for Brianna Davey to debut in goal for Australia's international match against 2012 London Olympic Games gold medal winning team and world number one-ranked United States next month in California.
Brianna Davey saved two penalties as the Matildas beat New Zealand’s Football Ferns 4-2 on penalties to seal the Centenary Cup after the clash had finished 1-1 after 90 minutes at Canberra’s McKeller Park on Sunday.
