Steaua Bucureşti vs Chelsea

2 October 2013-PA Sport

Chelsea win soured by Torres injury

Fernando Torres will undergo a scan to determine the full extent of the knee injury he suffered as Chelsea claimed a 4-0 win over Steaua Bucharest to get its UEFA Champions League Group E campaign back on track.

Torres, who earlier in the day received a Football Association disciplinary reprieve after his altercation with Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen, started for a third successive game but lasted just 11 minutes before being substituted after failing to shake off a blow to his left knee.

Chelsea recovered to make amends for the round one loss to Basel and last season's UEFA Europa League defeat at the home of the Romanian champion with a comprehensive triumph.

Blues boss Jose Mourinho confirmed Torres will not be available to link up with Spain after this weekend's match at Norwich City, for which he is suspended after his dismissal at White Hart Lane.

"The doctor is very confident it's not a big injury, like we had with Marco van Ginkel (who is out for six months)," Mourinho said.

"It's something in his knee, his ligament, and we have to wait for the scan tomorrow.

"He knows that he doesn't play against Norwich. He knows that he cannot go to the national team.

"He knows he has 15 days until the next match he can play, which is against Cardiff. Let's see the scan. If the injury is an injury for 15 days, I think he'll be fine. That's okay.

"The problem is if it's more time and it's a pity for the guy, because he's in a very good moment. He played fantastic against Tottenham.

"Today he started the game because he deserved to start the game. It's a pity, but that's football."

Mourinho defended the Football Association's decision not to retrospectively punish Torres and hand the Spain striker an additional suspension.

"It was quite a real pressure to make him have a two or three-match ban, but at the same time I was more than confident," added Mourinho, who again issued a thinly-veiled criticism of Vertonghen.

"The FA defends the interest and the culture of English football. It's not to protect cheats and people that simulate.

"To protect English football is to protect people who play the game with emotion, intensity. It didn't surprise me, what happened."

Should the scan reveal significant damage, Torres could miss the first game of a double header with Schalke, which after Chelsea's win in Romania, could determine the group winner.

In a far cry from its display in the same stadium in March, Ramires scored either side of a Daniel Georgievski own goal before Frank Lampard added a late fourth for the 2012 European Cup winner and 2013 Europa League champion.

Mourinho said: "We played a very good game from minute one."

Chelsea met Steaua in the Europa League earlier this year by virtue of becoming the first holder to exit the group stage of the Champions League, a humiliation Mourinho is eager to avoid repeating.

"I put a lot of pressure on the players for this game," he added.

"I keep saying I don't want to play UEFA Cup (Europa League) and I'm putting that pressure on them because we have to do everything we can to keep Chelsea playing in the Champions League, because the Champions League is our competition.

"It's a way you can grow up faster. When you play for a big club, you need to have big challenges, sometimes bigger than your real conditions to succeed.

"It's the way to accelerate the process. I'm happy because they coped very, very well and we played very good football.

"In attacking areas we were beautiful in certain moments, but I think everything started in the back.

"Petr (Cech), Iva (Branislav Ivanovic), David (Luiz) - zero mistakes all game - John (Terry), Ash (Ashley Cole).

"They gave us big stability there and from there the team could cope with the situation."

Chelsea is in a much more positive position than after the loss to Basel.

Mourinho added: "At this moment I don't want to think about being first, I want to think about qualifying. After that we'll see, but I think everything is open."

Juan Mata and Andre Schurrle were praised for their contributions.

The Spain playmaker has been a peripheral figure so far this term due to Mourinho's desire for him to track back more.

The Portuguese even fielded him in his favoured role behind the main striker, despite suggesting Oscar was his number one playmaker. The pair interchanged.

"He played very good with the ball, as he always does," Mourinho added.

"And he played very good without the ball, as he never did."

Mourinho believes Schurrle's performance was a result of his position.

"His best position is on the left," Mourinho said.

"Today he started from that position and people understand the quality he has. He was in the game a lot, getting ball in space to attack the defender. The kid was very strong."

Steaua boss Laurentiu Reghecampf was miserable after a second heavy loss.

"We didn't have a very good game," he said.

"We didn't manage to cope with the level of the opposition.

"The first two goals were gifts for Chelsea. There's not one guilty person, they're all guilty and the first guilty person is myself."
