Bayern too strong for Manchester City

Manchester City endured another difficult European night at the Etihad Stadium as it was overwhelmed 3-1 by reigning UEFA Champions League champion Bayern Munich.
PA Sport

3 Oct 2013 - 6:30 AM  UPDATED 3 Oct 2013 - 8:46 AM

The formidable attacking trio of Franck Ribery, Thomas Muller and Arjen Robben all struck as City was completely outplayed in UEFA Champions League Group D, although it also contributed to its own downfall.

Errors from goalkeeper Joe Hart and the defence proved costly but the host at least finished strongly as Alvaro Negredo replied and Bayern had former City defender Jerome Boateng sent off.

The result lifted Bayern clear at the top of the group and, even after just two games, probably left City in a battle for second place with its next opponent CSKA Moscow.

The overwhelming feeling was that a City side which thrashed Manchester United just 10 days previously was taught a footballing lesson.

Manuel Pellegrini was appointed by City in the northern summer in expectation he could improve the club's standing in Europe but this was clear indication of the scale of the task ahead.

Yet as brilliant as the German side was, the defence and Hart had a harrowing time.

Hart was at fault for Bayern's opener and was beaten too easily for the third goal, while Gael Clichy was the chief culprit for the second.

City seemed intent on making a lively start but it soon became apparent that Bayern had the class to boss the game.

It carved out an early opening as David Alaba was given room to cross but Robben was unable to direct a header on target.

City showed some promise as Jesus Navas crossed for Micah Richards but the defender, surprisingly recalled in place of Pablo Zabaleta for the fixture, headed at Manuel Neuer.

Bayern firmly took control of the match in the seventh minute as Ribery cut in from the left and unleashed a low swerving shot from the edge of the area which Hart failed to deal with.

It was powerful strike but after a relatively serene spell for club and country for Hart - keeping five successive clean sheets in August and September - it was a mistake that will provide untimely ammunition to critics ahead of England's climactic 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Bayern oozed class thereafter, barely giving City a kick as it dominated possession and cut its way through the host with quick and incisive passes.

Remarkably, it yielded few clear-cut chances in the first half but Hart punched unconvincingly from an Alaba cross and Toni Kroos had a long-range shot deflected narrowly wide.

Robben picked up possession on the edge of the area and drove across goal but Muller was unable to turn in.

Alaba then shot at Hart and the rebound off Matija Nastasic also needed to be dealt with by the keeper but City could consider itself fortunate to reach the interval 1-0 down.

Bayern stepped up the pace after the break and Robben had a shot deflected wide from the edge of the area after more neat interplay.

City had also looked more determined after the resumption but its renewed spirit was killed off as Dante picked out Muller with a crossfield pass.

The City defence was simply caught flat-footed and Clichy stopped in expectation of an offside flag that never came, exposing Hart.

Muller seized the opportunity and rounded Hart to double the lead.

Just three minutes later the task was put completely beyond City.

Fernandinho lost the ball in midfield and Robben charged down the right, bypassing Clichy and wrong-footing Nastasic before beating Hart at his near post.

Muller hit the post as Bayern threatened more but City finally found some bite late on.

James Milner had a shot tipped over and fellow substitute Negredo pulled one back with a powerful shot off the post 11 minutes from time.

Boateng was shown a straight red card after halting a Yaya Toure burst on the edge of the area and David Silva curled the resulting free-kick against the bar.

Negredo also headed wide as City gave itself some encouragement for the remainder of the campaign.

Group D rival CSKA Moscow drew level on points with Manuel Pellegrini's men after beating Viktoria Plzen 3-2 in St Petersburg.

Plzen goalkeeper Matus Kozacik's error allowed Radim Reznik's 78th-minute
backpass to slip under his foot, and it proved to be decisive.

Cristiano Ronaldo helped Real Madrid establish a stranglehold on
Group B with a double in a 4-0 demolition of FC

Ronaldo, who scored a hat-trick in Real's 6-1 opening day victory
over Galatasaray, and Angel di Maria both struck twice as the Spanish side
swept the visitor aside at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Portugal international marked his 100th appearance in European
club football with a 21st-minute header, and then doubled his tally 20
minutes into the second half before Di Maria sealed the win with two
goals inside the final 19 minutes.

Real stands four points clear of second-placed Juventus, which was
denied victory in a dramatic conclusion to its 2-2 home draw with

Didier Drogba's first-half strike had given the Turkish outfit the
lead, but Arturo Vidal levelled with a 76th-minute penalty and
substitute Fabio Quagliarella thought he had secured the points with a
late header, only for Umut Bulut to equalise within seconds.

There was similar frustration for Manchester United, which looked to
have put its domestic troubles to one side when Danny Welbeck headed
it into an 18th-minute lead over Shakhtar Donetsk.

However, Taison's 76th-minute equaliser denied David Moyes a precious
win, although he did become the first manager of an English club to
leave the Donbass Arena in Europe's premier club competition with
something to show for his efforts at the end of a 1-1 draw.

The two sides remain locked together on four points at the top of
Group A with Bayer Leverkusen having closed the gap with a last-ditch
2-1 victory over pointless Real Sociedad.

Simon Rolfes put the German side ahead on the stroke of half-time and
although Carlos Vela cancelled out his effort six minutes after the
break, substitute Jens Hegeler curled home a brilliant stoppage-time
free-kick to win it.

With the scores locked at 1-1, Leverkusen substitute Robbie Kruse was guilty of failing to make the most of a gilt-edged chance as time ran down, but Hegeler spared his blushes when he despatched his last-gasp effort into the top corner.

There were no such difficulties for Group C leader Paris Saint-Germain or Olympiacos as both clubs eased to 3-0 victories.

Star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic claimed a double either side of
defender Marquinhos's effort as PSG wrapped up the points against Benfica
inside the opening 30 minutes.

But Olympiacos frontman Kostas Mitroglou went one better as he
plundered a hat-trick to see the Greek side past Anderlecht in Belgium.

Mitroglu opened the scoring after 17 minutes, and then found the back
of the net again 11 minutes after the restart before completing his
treble with 18 minutes remaining.

90 COMMENT The Bayern fans are doing the Poznan now as we enter three minutes' stoppage time.
90 COMMENT City have the ball in defence and are passing it around well, now. Milner - who has been impressive since coming on - spreads it wide to Clichy, whose first-time cross is met by Silva but his effort goes way off target from close range.
89 COMMENT Just wide! City only have a couple of minutes to make the extra man count and they almost do as Milner works hard on the left before producing an excellent cross for Negredo to meet in the middle, but his header drifts inches wide of the post.
87 COMMENT Off the bar! Silva takes the free kick and his left-footed effort curls around the wall before rattling the crossbar with Neuer beaten. That would have set up quite the finale.
86 RC Red card awarded to J. Boateng of FC Bayern München
86 COMMENT BOATENG IS SENT OFF!! Silva flicks the ball through and Toure latches on to it. Boateng has no option but to bring the City midfielder down with an outstretched leg, and as the last man he's given his marching orders by the referee.

85 SO Substitute out F. Ribéry of FC Bayern München

83 COMMENT Bayern immediately try to impose their authority again as Kroos bursts forward before feeding it to Ribery, who is at full pelt before he is brought down 25 yards from goal.
82 COMMENT City have a slight spring in their step after that excellent goal. Too late for a comeback, though, surely?
79 AS Assist by David Silva (Manchester City)
79 G GOAL (Manchester City): Scored by Negredo
79 COMMENT NEGREDO SCORES!! City have one back and it's a fine strike from the substitute as Silva cuts in from the left before sliding it through to Negredo, who gets a yard of space with a fine turn before bending a superb left-footed strike into the corner past Neuer.

79 COMMENT David Silva gave the assist.

78 SO Substitute out A. Robben of FC Bayern München
78 COMMENT A. Robben is done for the day. X. Shaqiri is his replacement.
77 COMMENT Save! Neuer finally has something meaningful to do as Milner collects the ball on the left and works it on to his right before drilling a fierce strike from 30 yards, and it looks bound for the top corner before Neuer fingertips it over.
76 SI Substitute in J. Kirchhoff of FC Bayern München
76 SO Substitute out B. Schweinsteiger of FC Bayern München
76 COMMENT Off the post! City look hapless at the back and Muller nearly grabs his second of the night as Hart fails to hold on to the first shot before the Bayern man hammers it off the goalkeeper and on to the upright.
76 COMMENT J. Kirchhoff comes on for B. Schweinsteiger.
75 YC Yellow card awarded to J. Milner of Manchester City
75 COMMENT Milner's first real contribution is to hack away the leg of Rafinha as the full-back looked to sprint forward, and the City midfielder goes straight into the book.
75 COMMENT J. Milner is yellow-carded.
74 COMMENT Bayern's fans are the only ones making noise. It's all very quiet in the Etihad Stadium. To be fair to the visiting supporters, though, they haven't stopped chanting all night.
73 COMMENT Toure swings a lovely pass wide for Navas who squares it to Silva, amd the substitute tries to flick it on but ends up taking it out of the path of Toure, and Bayern are back in possession.
72 COMMENT Nastasic plays it wide to Clichy, who tries to move inside but Boateng shows good strength to win the ball and clear.
70 SO Substitute out S. Nasri of Manchester City
70 SI Substitute in J. Milner of Manchester City
70 SO Substitute out S. Agüero of Manchester City
70 SI Substitute in David Silva of Manchester City
70 YC Yellow card awarded to S. Nasri of Manchester City
70 COMMENT Bayern's passing has been frustrating City and it boils over for Nasri, who gets booked for a clumsy foul on the hosts' left. And that's his last contribution as he and Aguero are removed for Silva and Milner.
70 COMMENT S. Agüero is done for the day. David Silva is his replacement.
70 COMMENT S. Nasri is cautioned by the referee.
70 COMMENT J. Milner enters play, replacing S. Nasri.
68 COMMENT The visitors are stroking it around beautifully, and Schweinsteiger finds a gap before laying it wide to Alaba, who tries to fire it in low but it's blocked and City clear, but Bayern quickly regain possession.
66 COMMENT Arjen Robben has had six shots tonight. That's twice as many as the entire City team. It's been a dominant performance from the holders.
65 COMMENT Bayern are in behind again as Muller latches on to a loose ball but is forced wide by Hart. He looks for Ribery back in the middle of the box but Kompany cuts it out. City are really struggling.
63 COMMENT Another chance! City win a corner but Bayern break with five attackers against three defenders, and Ribery lifts it over to Kroos, who collects on the edge of the box before blasting a low effort which Hart keeps out.
62 COMMENT Save! Hart prevents Bayern going further ahead as Robben fires low from 25 yards out and the goalkeeper parries away before sprinting to snatch the ball away from Ribery.
61 COMMENT Hart once again beaten at his near post. The England man hasn't had the best of nights, but neither have his team-mates.
60 AS Assist by T. Kroos (FC Bayern München)
60 G GOAL (FC Bayern München): Scored by A. Robben
60 COMMENT The assist came from T. Kroos.
60 COMMENT ROBBEN SCORES!! BAYERN HAVE THREE!! It's looking very miserable for City now as Kroos steals it off Fernandinho in midfield, and the midfielder gives it to Robben, who turns Nastasic in and out before sneaking it past Hart and in off the near post. Game over.
57 SI Substitute in Negredo of Manchester City
57 SO Substitute out E. Džeko of Manchester City
57 COMMENT E. Džeko is replaced with Negredo.
57 COMMENT City - and Clichy in particular - were desperate for an offside flag there, but it never came. The hosts are in real trouble now.
56 AS Assist by Dante (FC Bayern München)
56 G GOAL (FC Bayern München): Scored by T. Müller
56 COMMENT The assist came from Dante.
56 COMMENT MULLER SCORES!! IT'S 2-0 BAYERN!! Nightmare for City as Dante hammers a pinpoint ball over the City defence and, with Clichy completely out of position, Muller picks it up before rounding Hart with some excellent control and playing it into an empty net.
55 COMMENT Fernandinho tries to head the ball on in midfield but gives it straight to Alaba. Toure is quick to help track back and win the ball, though, before sending it back to Hart.
53 COMMENT Close! Danger for City as Rafinha has the ball in an advanced position in the box and has Muller to aim for at the far post, but his cross deflects behind. The corner eventually comes back out and Robben picks it up before curling an effort from 20 yards which clips a defender and goes just wide of
52 COMMENT Nasri does well to steal the ball off Rafinha in midfield and give City another platform, but Kompany's long ball goes straight through to Neuer.
50 COMMENT Kompany launches it forward looking for Aguero and Neuer races out to the corner of his box, getting too strong a touch on it and it goes out for a throw. City quickly win another corner but again Bayern get the ball away without the hosts troubling the goal.
48 COMMENT City have started brightly, here. Navas and Richards link up on the right before finding Fernandinho, who wins another corner, but Kroos and Schweinsteiger manage to get it clear.
47 COMMENT Fernandinho floats it to Aguero on the edge of the box and the City man tries to turn but is confronted by a defender and it goes out for a corner. Nasri's ball is headed up in the air and Richards tries an audacious bicycle kick which rolls wide of the goal.
46 COMMENT Bayern start the second half and we're back up and running.
45 YC Yellow card awarded to T. Kroos of FC Bayern München
45 COMMENT And moments after the first booking of the match, Kroos gets the second as he cynically takes out Navas, who was haring down the right-hand side.
45 COMMENT T. Kroos is cautioned by the referee.
43 COMMENT Richards is the latest to be penalised as he goes in for a challenge on the flank, and Schweinsteiger whips in the free kick but City manage to clear their lines. They'll probably be happy to go in only one down.
42 YC Yellow card awarded to S. Agüero of Manchester City
42 COMMENT S. Agüero is yellow-carded.
42 COMMENT Bayern fire in a free kick which Clichy heads clear and Aguero chases the ball forward before taking out Rafinha late as the full-back passed back to Neuer, and the striker earns himself the first booking of the match.
41 COMMENT The hosts have their first look at a push forward in numbers and Navas picks it up on the right before trying an ambitious diagonal pass to Nasri on the far side, but it goes straight out for a goal kick.
39 COMMENT Kompany shows all his nous and experience as Muller tries to break forward down the right, but the City captain comes across to muscle the Germany international off the ball and see it out for a goal kick.
38 COMMENT Richards does well to win a header from Hart's ball forward and flick it towards Navas, but the winger is caught offside again before Clichy brings down Rafinha on the far side and the visitors have the ball once more.
36 COMMENT Schweinsteiger takes a shot from the free kick but it goes straight into the wall, which jumped high in unison. Bayern still in possession, though.
35 COMMENT Danger here for City as Nastasic gives away a free kick for a foul on Muller just outside the box, left of the D.
34 COMMENT City are still sitting back and allowing Bayern all the possession. For all their time on the ball, though, it's still only 1-0.
32 COMMENT So close! Kroos spreads wide to Ribery and he sets Alaba free, who drills it low and it's blocked by Hart before he tries again and the ball comes off Nastasic straight into the City goalkeeper's hands. That could have gone anywhere.
31 COMMENT Chance! Dante fires an excellent ball forward and Robben is first to Clichy's header, giving him the chance to dart to the line before firing it across goal and Muller is inches away from tapping the ball in. The hosts are really struggling to get out of their half at the moment.
29 COMMENT The flag goes up at the other end as Alaba plays a superb one-two with Ribery on the left before doing the same with Muller further forward, but the full-back had strayed offside.
28 COMMENT Dzeko comes deep to collect Hart's clearance and sets Navas away down the right. The winger sees his first cross blocked but manages to get to the by-line before blasting the ball out of play over the bar from the tightest of angles. He wants a corner but the officials aren't interested.
27 COMMENT Bayern win it in midfield and have five men in a dangerous-looking attack, but Fernandinho does well to win the ball and halt the visitors' progress.
26 COMMENT Ribery skips past Richards on the left and fires a dangerous cross into the six-yard box, but Nastasic is there to make a vital clearance.
24 COMMENT Muller gets beyond the defence on the left-hand side of the box but has no support and has to drill all the way back to Lahm outside the box, and the Bayern captain mishits the ball giving City a chance to clear.
23 COMMENT Kompany launches a high diagonal ball over for Aguero, who collects it wide on the left. City are forced backwards and Nastasic tries another high ball forwards, but it goes straight out for a throw.
22 COMMENT Rafinha and Lahm link up on the right before the Bayern skipper looks for Robben further forward, but Clichy does well to cut it out.
19 COMMENT Kompany lifts a delightful ball over looking for Navas on the right flank, but the winger is caught offside. Bayern are playing a very high line.
18 COMMENT Robben breaks forward through the middle but Kompany is there to clear. Bayern still have the ball, though, and it's worked to Alaba, who tries his luck against Hart from 30 yards, driving a shot well off target.
15 COMMENT Hart is given a routine stop from 20 yards before the flag goes up for offside at the other end, catching Aguero out. The hosts really need to get hold of the ball for a longer amount of time.
14 COMMENT The visitors are dominating possession at the moment, passing it around with real zip. Ribery and Alaba try to go through the middle before they check back, but another attack comes quickly and Nastasic has to put it out for a corner.
12 COMMENT Play resumes as the City fans ring out a chorus of 'Blue Moon' to try and inspire their side after that disappointing start.
11 COMMENT The corner comes to nothing and City get a goal kick which is headed back before Richards goes up for the second ball, clattering into Kroos in the process and leaving the Bayern man flat on the floor.
10 COMMENT Lahm's pass catches Schweinsteiger short and Yaya Toure nips in to steal the ball, but Bayern get it back quickly and set off up the other end as Robben drives down the right before winning a corner as his pull back is blocked.
8 COMMENT Hart will be very disappointed with that. It was a powerful shot, but no goalkeeper wants to be beaten at their near post from that distance. A tricky task just got a lot harder for Pellegrini's men.
7 AS Assist by Rafinha (FC Bayern München)
7 G GOAL (FC Bayern München): Scored by F. Ribéry
7 COMMENT RIBERY SCORES!! BAYERN LEAD EARLY!! It's a real shock start as the ball is switched over to Ribery on the left-hand side, and the Frenchman cuts on to his right foot before rifling a powerful shot from 25 yards which sneaks in at Joe Hart's near post.
7 COMMENT Assist by Rafinha.
5 COMMENT Aguero takes the set piece and it comes back out to him, but his second ball finds Richards, who tries a header towards goal which is straight at Neuer.
4 COMMENT City win a free kick inside the Bayern half and it's lifted into the area. The defence can't get it away convincingly and it goes behind for a corner.
2 COMMENT Manuel Neuer is forced to come out early as Nastasic lifts it over and Aguero gets beyong the defence, but the Bayern goalkeeper sprints out to send the ball into touch.
1 COMMENT We're underway as Man City get the game started.
0 COMMENT STAT ATTACK: Opta tell us that Sergio Aguero has scored in each of his last three Champions League starts for City. There's no doubt he'd love to make it four tonight.
0 COMMENT The teams have been announced so let's get straight into showing you the line-ups, starting with Manuel Pellegrini's men...
0 COMMENT FULL TIME at the Etihad Stadium and it's finished 3-1 to Bayern Munich after a truly dominant performance. Negredo's fine strike and Boateng's late red card gave the hosts a small amount of hope, but Guardiola's men deservedly take the three points.
0 COMMENT That's HALF TIME at the Etihad Stadium and Bayern take a 1-0 lead into the break. City have been completely dominated by the visitors as Guardiola's men have passed it around superbly.
0 COMMENT BAYERN: Neuer; Rafinha, Boateng, Dante, Alaba; Lahm; Robben, Schweinsteiger, Kroos, Ribery; Muller. // Subs: Starke, van Buyten, Mandzukic, Shaqiri, Kirchhoff, Gotze, Contento.
0 COMMENT Bayern top Group D, then, with two wins from two, while City face a tricky trip to Moscow to face CSKA next, knowing they really need a result to give themselves a chance of getting out of the group stage.
0 COMMENT In the early kick-off in Group D, CSKA Moscow ran out 3-2 winners over Victoria Plzen. Both sides lost their opening fixture so City will stay second even if they lose tonight. Unless it's by about five goals...
0 COMMENT Pep Guardiola, meanwhile, names no recognised striker in the Bayern starting line-up as he drops Mario Mandzukic to the bench in favour of Toni Kroos, meaning Thomas Muller, Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery will likely play a fluid front three tonight. Expect lots of movement.
0 COMMENT We're just a few minutes away from kick-off at the Etihad Stadium and the teams march out to an electric atmosphere in Manchester. Can the hosts upset the European champions?
0 COMMENT Good evening and welcome to LIVE play-by-play coverage of the Champions League clash between Manchester City and Bayern Munich. This is a real top-drawer European fixture and it promises to be a fascinating encounter at the Etihad Stadium.
0 COMMENT MAN CITY: Hart; Richards, Kompany, Nastasic, Clichy; Toure, Fernandinho; Navas, Aguero, Nasri; Dzeko. // Subs: Pantilimon, Zabaleta, Lescott, Milner, Garcia, Silva, Negredo.
0 COMMENT It's back to square one for City, then, who again struggle at Europe's top table. Bayern, however, look a force to be reckoned with yet again. Some good pressing and incredible quick passing left the hosts chasing shadows from the start.
0 COMMENT Pellegrini's men had just 33 per cent of possession in that opening period. And they're the home side. City will have to change something if they're to get a result tonight.
0 COMMENT So, Micah Richards is in the Man City side ahead of Pablo Zabaleta, while Sergio Aguero returns to the XI after missing the Premier League defeat at Aston Villa through injury. Gael Clichy and Jesus Navas are also in as Pellegrini makes four changes from Saturday's 3-2 loss.
0 COMMENT And that's all from the Etihad Stadium tonight. Many thanks for joining us for our LIVE commentary this evening. See you soon!
0 COMMENT We're moments away from the restart in Manchester. Can the hosts turn this one around?
