The Japan Football Association has extended the contract of national team coach Alberto Zaccheroni through the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals in Brazil.
Zaccheroni's deal, however, could be shortened if Japan fails to qualify for the World Cup, the JFA said.
The Asian qualifying tournament wraps up in June next year.
Japan has seven points in Group B after beating Oman 3-0, Jordan 6-0 and drawing 1-1 with Australia this month in the final round of World Cup qualifiers.
The JFA also said Kuniya Daini has been appointed president, taking over from Junji Ogura, who retired.
