Siena breathed new life into its battle to avoid relegation with a
hard-fought win over Bologna.
Alberto Malesani's men are now unbeaten in six Serie A games although fourth-bottom Lazio's win at Cagliari means they remain four points from safety.
Argentinian Marcelo Larrondo grabbed the only goal for Siena after 10 minutes as the hosts maintained the momentum gained from last week's astonishing comeback at Juventus.
Trailing 3-0 to the Bianconeri, Siena hit back to earn a point and they were quickly off the mark here through Larrondo as he rose above his marker Gaby Mudingayi to nod past Bologna keeper Emiliano Viviano.
The goal came a minute after Bologna could have gone in front themselves.
Adailton lost his marker in the area and his close-range header was saved superbly by Gianluca Curci.
The game went into a lull after a frantic start with the next chance not arriving until the 27th minute when Curci again excelled to deny the lively Adailton.
Bologna's attacking forays dried up as the half wore on as the game became bogged down in midfield with neither side willing to take a chance and commit men forward.
Indeed, the next chance, three minutes after half-time, came about due to a woeful cross from Siena's Abdel Ghezzal.
Ghezzal was aiming to pick out one of the strikers in the box but instead miscued his centre only for the ball to nearly catch out Viviano with the keeper watching helplessly as it landed just the wrong side of the crossbar from Siena's point of view.
Ghezzal did better with his next attempt, a rasping 20-yard drive which Viviano got down well to smother.
Bologna's 1-1 draw with Sampdoria last week moved them 11 points clear of the bottom three but the defeat has seen that advantage trimmed to 10.
It is still likely to be enough for them to avoid a nervy end to the season but they offered little here to suggest anything other than lower mid-table is attainable.
The closest they came to an equaliser was a Henry Gimenez effort with 10 minutes to go.
Gimenez found himself free five yards from goal but his snapshot was saved superbly by Curci.
The hosts came again and almost doubled the advantage shortly after, Alexandros Tziolis hitting the post with a wicked driven effort from the angle of the box.
Bologna did create one last chance but failed to trouble Curci as Miguel Britos fired high over the bar from a decent position.
Although they remain in deep trouble, Siena have at least taken an important psychological step in climbing off the foot of the table.
Livorno, beaten by Atalanta today, slip to the bottom.
