Chelsea interested in Cavani

Napoli president Auerlio De Laurentiis has confirmed that Chelsea is interested in Edinson Cavani, and he expects a bid for the player soon.

New Napoli manager Rafael Benitez is thought to be keen to keep the striker - who scored 29 goals last season - in Italy, but that looks unlikely with a host of potential suitors chasing the talented Uruguay international.

The 26-year-old has long been linked with a move to the Premier League and is believed to be attracting interest from a number of top European clubs.

De Laurentiis admits that Chelsea is among those which have been tracking the player although he claims that it is yet to enter negotiations over any potential move.

"There is interest from Chelsea in Cavani, they’ll call me in the next few hours," he told Radio Marte.

"If Cavani is sold then I’ll reinvest all of the 63 million euros (A$87 milion) of his rescission (buy-out) clause.

"I’ll be delighted if he stays, but if he leaves then he will be adequately replaced."

Cavani is not the only Napoli player who has been linked with a move away from the Stadio San Paolo, with the club having already lost Hugo Campagnaro to Inter while Colombian Juan Zuniga has reportedly attracted interest from other clubs in Serie A.

Although he can do nothing about Campagnaro, De Laurentiis is adamant that Zuniga's future is in Naples.

"Zuniga will stay at Napoli. I won’t sell him," he added.

"At the moment the priorities are in defence given the departure of Hugo Campagnaro and the change in system.

"Benitez’s formation will also require a midfielder, so we are looking for an important figure in the middle.

"We also require another right-sided second striker. We are closing in on someone in this area, but I can’t say anything more in order to avoid the asking price going up.

"We’ll also consider a goalkeeper, but not to replace Morgan De Sanctis. We’re in talks with a youngster to be our second choice."
