Italy queries citizenship of players

9 October 2012-DPA

Police in Italy are investigating whether foreign footballers playing in Serie A and in minor leagues have illegally obtained Italian citizenship, local media report.

Investigators in Fermo are looking into hundreds of naturalisations awarded by the central Italian town in the past seven years to South American players, based on a law that grants citizenship to foreigners with Italian ancestors.

Police believe that some footballers' agents bribed city employees to forge documents proving the Italian origins of their clients, mostly Argentines and Brazilians.

After being naturalised, the footballers played for some time in lower-division clubs in the Fermo area and were then transferred to major clubs.

The mayor of Fermo has reportedly suspended the citizenship of 45 people whom police believe to have obtained citizenship illegally.
