Genoa president wants tough action

23 April 2012-PA Sport

Genoa president Enrico Preziosi has called for the fans who created the trouble which led to his side's Serie A game at home to Siena being suspended for 45 minutes to be jailed.

With Genoa trailing 4-0 early in the second half at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, an angry group of home fans accumulated around the tunnel area, from where they sent fireworks on to the pitch and threatened to invade it.

The game was halted by referee Paolo Tagliavento and after a break of 20 minutes, the match officials and the Siena team left the field with the furious fans applauding them, but not letting the Genoa players approach.

The group demanded the home players take off their shirts and captain Marco Rossi gathered jerseys from all but Giuseppe Sculli, who tearfully confronted the supporters.

The fans retreated from the tunnel after his show of passion and allowed the game to continue. It ended 4-1.

"I'm sorry that 60 or 100 people can say and do as they want with impunity without us having the ability to control them and send them home," Preziosi was quoted as saying by www.gazzetta.it

"They cannot take over the stadium and enforce their law.

"These people should go to jail, they are the evil of Genoa."

Preziosi claimed he would prefer it if his side was now given a stadium ban.

"If today a child had suffered a ruptured eardrum what would happen?," he said. "Do we have to wait for a dead man before putting them all in jail?

"I do not fear them. I hope we get a ban from playing at home, so we have to play away and get a bit of calm."

Giancarlo Abete, the president of the Italian Football Federation, added: "The events in Genoa are a very ugly incident which takes us backward and we must react."
