Berliner AK thumps Hoffenheim

19 August 2012-PA Sport

Bundesliga side Hoffenheim was on the receiving end of a huge shock in the first round of the DFB-Pokal as Berliner AK ran out a 4-0 winner.

The victory - the biggest ever in this competition by a fourth-tier side against top-flight opposition - was as good as sealed by the interval as the host quickly moved into a 3-0 lead.

Metin Cakmak opened the scoring after two minutes before AK doubled the advantage after half an hour when Justin Gerlach slotted home.

Kevin Kruschke made it 3-0 to leave Markus Babbel's visitor reeling.

Cakmak's second of the match completed an amazing rout as Hoffenheim failed to find any response after the break.

There were no such problems for reigning Bundesliga champion and current DFB-Pokal holder Borussia Dortmund, which was a comfortable 3-0 winner over Oberneuland.

Marco Reus opened the scoring after 10 minutes, while Jakub Blaszczykowski added the second and Ivan Perisic wrapped up the scoring in the second half.

Borussia Monchengladbach was a 2-0 winner over Alemannia Aachen, Juan Arango and Havard Nordveit with the goals, while strikes by Simon Rolfes, Karim Bellarabi, Stefan Kiessling and Junior Fernandes lifted Bayer Leverkusen to a 4-0 win over Carl Zeiss Jena.

Stuttgart was also a 4-0 winner, against Falkensee-Finkenkrug, thanks to goals by Vedad Ibisevic, Martin Harnik (two) and Tunay Torun.

Freiburg was made to work harder before booking its place in round two with a 2-1 win at Viktoria Hamburg.

Max Kruse opened the scoring for Freiburg only for Jakob Sachs to level a minute later, but the Bundesliga side got the job done after the break with Sebastian Freis hitting a late winner.

Duisburg was a 1-0 winner over Hallescher, St Pauli defeated Offenburg 3-0 and Cologne was a 2-1 winner at Unterhaching.

Bundesliga newcomer Greuther Furth suffered a first-round exit as it was beaten 2-0 by Kickers Offenbach.

The 3.Liga side took a first-half lead through Thomas Rathgeber's penalty and Lars Bender added a late second as Greuther sought an equaliser.

Wolfsburg swept aside Oberliga minnow FC Schonberg 5-0 with the aid of an Ivica Olic hat-trick.

Diego, back from a loan spell with Atletico Madrid and desperate to prove his worth to the Lower Saxony faithful after a controversial first season with the club, and northern summer signing Bas Dost were also on the scoresheet for the Wolves.

Zlatko Dedic scored both goals as second-tier VfL Bochum beat Heidenheim 2-0.

Freiburg seeks revenge

After the disappointment of the DFB-Pokal semi-final exit to Stuttgart, Freiburg returns to the very same stadium on Monday (AEST) hoping for a "bonus" to what coach Christian Streich says is already a successful season.
