Greuther Furth has sacked coach Michael Buskens in a bid to improve the club's chances of retaining its Bundesliga status.
Bueskens, 44, led Furth last season to promotion to the top flight for the first time.
But the Bavarian club has struggled this season and currently props up the table on 12 points, three behind Augsburg.
Bayer Leverkusen pushed Nurnberg closer to relegation to the 2. Bundesliga and returned to the top four with a convincing 4-1 win in Bavaria.
