Cantona plays down presidency push

11 January 2012-AP

Former Manchester United star Eric Cantona wants France's future president to pay more attention to the homeless - but doesn't necessarily want the job himself.

Cantona has used his fame to launch a campaign to get politicians and voters to back a French foundation that works to house the needy.

Cantona once called on people to empty their bank accounts in protest at the global financial crisis.

The newspaper Liberation published a letter from Cantona on Monday suggesting he was seeking to run for the French presidency in elections in April and May.

But on Tuesday the newspaper published an interview in which Cantona says he's trying to call attention to those in need of housing, and wants the candidates to make 'real commitments' in that direction.
