Malbranque signs for Lyon

26 August 2012-AFP

Steed Malbranque has ended his one-year hiatus from top-level football by returning to his former club Lyon on a one-year contract.

The 32-year-old French midfielder had been training with Lyon since the beginning of July and took part in some of the club's pre-season friendly matches.

After making his debut with Lyon in 1998, Malbranque joined Fulham in July 2001 and it proved to be the start of a long and fruitful period in English football.

He went on to play for Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland and scored 39 goals in 333 appearances over a period of 10 seasons in England.

A year ago, he was released by Sunderland and returned to France to join St Etienne, only for his contract to be terminated by mutual consent for personal reasons a few weeks later.
