Besiktas barred from Europa League

7 July 2012-AP

Sport's highest court has dismissed an appeal by Besiktas against the Turkish club's suspension from next season's Europa League.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport on Friday upheld UEFA's May 30 decision to suspend Besiktas for violating "financial fair play" regulations.

The court also upheld a fine of 100,000 euros ($121,000).

Besiktas qualified for the Europa League by finishing fourth in the Turkish league's season-ending playoff system.

The club will have to give up the spot since the court's decision is final.

Besiktas was sanctioned for breaching financial licensing rules which require that all salaries and transfer fees are paid.

UEFA had originally fined the club 500,000 euros ($600,000), but that was reduced on appeal.
