Bats backs Lloris to succeed

7 September 2012-PA Sport

France captain Hugo Lloris has what it takes to succeed at Tottenham Hotspur, according to his former goalkeeping coach at Lyon.

Lloris was signed ahead of the transfer deadline in an £8 million ($12.3 million) deal.

However, Les Bleus coach Didier Deschamps indicated Lloris's position as France number one would be under consideration if the goalkeeper was not able to dislodge American veteran Brad Friedel between the posts at Spurs.

That, though, should not prove an issue, according to Joel Bats.

The Lyon coach told L'Equipe: "He is one of the best three goalkeepers in the world. Hugo could play against any player in any league.

"Now, if he can help Tottenham to the next level, it could be a springboard towards a bigger club."

Lloris played down the issue when it was raised ahead of France's 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Finland.

He said: "I am a professional and I can put all this aside.

"I am only and entirely focused on France.

"I have played enough matches in the past to be able to manage this."
