Report: Wigan 3 Wolves 2

14 May 2012-AFP

Wigan Athletic celebrated its escape from relegation by coming from behind to win 3-2 at home to relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers on the final day of the Premier League season.

Wigan, which was bottom of the table with 10 games to play, finished the season in 15th place after a run of seven wins in nine games that included victories over Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal.

Wolves, meanwhile, ended the campaign 12 points adrift of safety at the foot of the table, having failed to win a single game since sacking coach Mick McCarthy on 13 February.

The visitor took the lead in the ninth minute at the DW Stadium, with England international winger Matt Jarvis curling a fine shot into the top corner from outside the 18-metre area.

Wigan turned the game around in speedy fashion, however, with two goals in the space of two minutes tilting the momentum of the match in its favour.

Wolves' lead lasted for just three minutes, with Franco Di Santo sweeping the host level in the 12th minute after Stephen Hunt was caught in possession and the visitor failed to clear.

Two minutes later Wigan went in front, as Emmerson Boyce rose to power home a header from Jean Beausejour's left-wing corner.

Di Santo and Shaun Maloney both had chances to extend Wigan's lead in the second half before Boyce volleyed home from the edge of the box in the 79th minute to put Wigan 3-1 up.

Steven Fletcher replied for Wolves with four minutes remaining but the visitor could not prevent Wigan from crowning its stunning late-season surge with another victory.
