Rossi helps sink Spurs

30 July 2010-PA Sport

UEFA Champions League hopeful Tottenham Hotspur suffered a 4-1 defeat in its pre-season friendly at home to Spanish side Villarreal.

Harry Redknapp's side was caught cold early on at White Hart Lane as former Manchester United striker Giuseppe Rossi scored two first-half goals.

The Spurs boss rang the changes at half-time and saw Giovanni Dos Santos pull a goal back for his side.

However, a deflected Rossi strike and Marco Ruben's late goal secured a resounding win for the Yellow Submarine.

A hugely inexperienced Chelsea XI went down 5-1 at Wycombe.

Jon-Paul Pittman was the star of the night at Adams Park as he scored a four-minute hat-trick.

Chelsea, whose seniors are about to depart on a trip to Germany, fielded a side in which Franco Di Santo and Scott Sinclair were the only familiar faces.

Hearts was 2-1 winners against Gillingham in Kent.

Luke Rooney had put Gillingham in front but Hearts hit back through Arvydas Novikovas before Ismael Bouzid's headed winner.

Wigan Athletic's concluded its Austrian tour with a 0-0 draw against Turkish side Genclerbirligi in Klagenfurt.

New signing James McArthur made his first start for the Latics but it was Genclerbirligi which enjoyed the better of the game.

Michael Stewart went closest to breaking the deadlock when he hit the bar in the second half while Wigan's best chance saw Mohamed Diame shoot over with half-time approaching.
