Hoddle sees room for improvement

27 June 2012-PA Sport

Former England manager Glenn Hoddle believes the current national side needs to adopt a fresh approach if it is to end its indifferent performances in major tournaments.

England was eliminated in the quarter-final of EURO 2012 after a 4-2 penalty shootout loss to Italy.

That came after a goalless draw in Kiev, where the Azzurri wasted several chances to make the game safe before a spot-kick showdown was necessary to separate the two teams.

A lot of attention has been paid to England's profligacy in possession as well as its set-up in the last couple of days after the exit.

And Hoddle, while praising the campaign in Poland and Ukraine, also thinks current boss Roy Hodgson needs to think of new ways for England to become a leading force in football ahead of the qualification campaign for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Hoddle, whose reign from 1996 until 1999 included the World Cup second round defeat to Argentina in 1998, told Sky Sports News."We've got to change our shape when we're in possession.

"When I was manager I used wing-backs and tried to change the shape of the team from 4-4-2 because I learnt from my own experiences as a player.

"Roy will sort out which way and which system he wants to play but we need to give ourselves a better opportunity to attack.

"Looking forward to the World Cup qualifiers, we've got to keep the ball a bit better but there were lots of positives (from EURO 2012).

"I think we've got to come up with a better system but I'm sure that will be worked over in the coming months."
