Championship leader West Ham United beat Millwall 2-1 in a fiery east London derby after it was reduced to 10 men at Upton Park.

Hammers captain Kevin Nolan was shown a straight red card in the ninth minute for a challenge on Millwall defender Jack Smith, however Carlton Cole gave the home side the lead on the stroke of half-time when he headed home from close range.

Liam Trotter equalised for Millwall in the 66th minute when Abdoulaye Faye made a poor clearance which fell at the feet of the midfielder, who fired his sixth goal of the season from the edge of the area.

But West Ham went back in front just three minutes later in controversial circumstances. Millwall goalkeeper David Forde appeared to be fouled by Julien Faubert as he tried to punch the ball clear with Winston Reid volleying the ball into the top corner from 20 yards to seal the win.

Managerless Leeds United looked to put its recent troubles behind it as it beat 10-man Bristol City 3-0 less than a week after the departure of Simon Grayson.

Robert Snodgrass opened the scoring five minutes before the break before City defender James Wilson was sent off with a minute remaining in the first half for a poor challenge on Ross McCormack.

McCormack then added Leeds' second in the 79th minute before Luciano Becchio scored the third in stoppage-time to seal the first win for Whites caretaker manager Neil Redfearn.

Struggler Coventry City saw its hopes of moving one step closer to lifting itself out of the relegation zone dashed when Michael Chopra's last-minute goal saw it lose 3-2 at home against Ipswich Town.

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas opened the scoring for the visitor in the 22nd minute before the home side hit back through Sammy Clingan's penalty seven minutes later.

Gary Deegan then put the Sky Blues in front on the stroke of half-time but two second-half headers by Chopra, including one deep into stoppage-time, saw Coventry fall to the foot of the table.

Matt Phillips scored twice as Blackpool came from behind to beat promotion rival Cardiff City 3-1.

Joe Mason opened the scoring for the home side at the Cardiff City Stadium before Matt Phillips' scored either side of Kevin Phillips' 83rd-minute volley to move two points behind the Welsh side in the league table.

Will Buckley's 90th-minute goal saw Brighton & Hove Albion beat Leicester City 1-0 at the Amex Stadium.

Buckley volleyed the ball into the back of Kasper Schmeichel's net from the middle of the area after he was picked out by Vicente's cross from the right byline.

Watford beat Barnsley 2-1 at Vicarage Road thanks to John Eustace's double.

Eustace scored a goal in each half with Scott Golbourne's 85th-minute score for the visiting Tykes scant consolation.

In the other games, Burnley drew 1-1 with Peterborough United at Turf Moor. Paul Taylor gave Peterborough the lead with a strike in the 12th minute but the home side managed to salvage a point thanks to Jay Rodriguez's goal three minutes before stoppage-time.

Elsewhere, Middlesbrough drew 0-0 against Crystal Palace and the game between Doncaster Rovers and Reading and Portsmouth's match against Hull City were both postponed due to frozen pitches.

In the late kick-off, second-placed Southampton dropped points as it drew 0-0 against Birmingham City at St Andrews.

The result leaves the Saints four points behind leader West Ham.
