El Salvador coach Israel quits

10 July 2012-AP

El Salvador coach Ruben Israel has resigned, leaving behind only a letter saying he is stepping down.

El Salvador federation president Carlos Mendez Cabezas read Israel's letter to reporters on Monday.

Israel had criticised some journalists, saying when they 'have a microphone in their hand they feel the need to exercise power they surely do not have at home'.

Mendez Cabezas said he hoped to contact Israel, who is from Uruguay, and convince him to change his mind.

El Salvador has only one point from its first two FIFA World Cup qualifying matches. Mexico leads the group with six points and Costa Rica has four.
